If only his priesthood had ended and he was jailed when he attacked the other woman weeks beforehand, rather than just a $500 slap-on-the wrist fine, Irene might well be alive today!!!!
This is justice way too delayed. Take that Rene Guerra!!!

What an *ss!!! He thinks because it happened in 1960, and he's gotten away with it for so long, that he should just continue to be able to get away with it and not face any consequences!!! He got to have a life- Irene didn't. Hope he dies in prison!

I saw it, it was definitely updated, had a whole new slant on it, but continued to show how this case could've been prosecuted years earlier if it weren't for the stubbornness of Rene Guerra (whom I think refused to prosecute because it was his own religion)!!!

It's just a shame that it took this long, especially because it appears everyone knew he was guilty almost from the beginning. And now he's gotten to love a full life and at his age, probably won't spend long in prison. Sad.

More than 20,000 pieces of evidence and documents have been made available in the trial of a former priest accused of killing a McAllen beauty queen and schoolteacher.

That was the extent of revelations in a status hearing, which lasted less than 10 minutes, in the case of John Bernard Feit, who faces life in prison in connection with the death of Irene Garza.
Not discussed during the lightning-quick hearing was Feit’s bond, something proposed during Feit’s initial hearings and most recently at the June hearing.

Feit’s attorney, O. Rene Flores, who followed Feit back to the basement of the courthouse for a quick discussion before addressing the media, said his team, which includes co-counsel Ricardo Flores, is more concerned with other issues.

“We’re not immediately concerned with bond at this point. We have plenty of other things involved in the case that we’re directing our attention to,” Flores said. “As far as him being in custody and so forth, I’m not immediately concerned with that right now.”

Feit is scheduled back in court on Oct. 27.

No New Motions Filed in John Feitís Pretrial Hearing

    http://www.krgv.com/story/33624292/n...etrial-hearing

Former McAllen priest John Feit made an appearance in court on Thursday.

The purpose of the hearing was a status check. Both the state and defense are still preparing for trial.

The hearing was over in just a few minutes. No new motions were filed.

Another pretrial hearing is set for Dec. 8. Judge Luis Singleterry mentioned a trial date may be set at that hearing.

Attorneys done reviewing most evidence in Irene Garza murder case

    http://www.themonitor.com/news/local...d5f6b269d.html

John Bernard Feit, the 83-year-old former priest and lone suspect in the death of Irene Garza, listened on Monday morning as his attorney O. Rene Flores, and the prosecutors for the state, Assistant District Attorneys Michael Garza and Krystine Ramon, gave the court an update on the case that was re-initiated last year, 60 years after the killing took place.

Garza said they have gone through most, if not all, of the evidence ó more than 20,000 documents.

Flores said he too was ready ó aside from another 1,000 or so documents which were recently turned over to him.

Both attorneys are still awaiting the results of lab analysis of some of the evidence.

Trial Date Set for Suspect in Decades-Old Murder Case

    http://www.krgv.com/story/34491498/t...ld-murder-case

A former McAllen priest accused in a decades-old murder made a court appearance Monday morning.

John Feit was arrested for the murder of Irene Garza last year in Phoenix, Arizona.

Feit walked into court Monday using his walker and shook hands with people on his way to his seat. When his counsel asked him how he was feeling, Feit replied that he felt great.

The 92nd District judge, Luis Singleterry, set Feitís trial date for April 24.

Former priestís attorney files for change of venue

    http://www.themonitor.com/news/local...5f6260c43.html

The attorney for a former priest accused of killing a McAllen schoolteacher doesnít believe his client can get a fair trial in Hidalgo County, citing among some of his reasons, the overflow of coverage into the case that spans nearly 60 years.

    O. Rene Flores, a criminal defense attorney based in Edinburg, and the man who has been by John Bernard Feitís side since before he opted to waive his extradition from Arizona to Hidalgo County, formally filed a motion to have the trialís venue changed, arguing that his client will not receive a fair trial in the county.

Flores on Tuesday filed a memorandum to the court containing more than 700 pages of documented evidence in support of his argument that the former priest has been over covered by local, state, national and international media.
Flores claims that up to more than 75 percent of potential Hidalgo County jurors have been exposed to unsubstantiated rumors and evidence of Feitís alleged guilt ó much of which would be inadmissible in court ó and he claims another 69 percent of those jurors already believe Feit to be guilty, the memo states.

ďThe pervasive, prejudicial, and inflammatory nature of the media coverage thus makes a change of venue necessary to preserve Feitís constitutional right to a fair and impartial trial,Ē Flores states in the memo.

Flores in his argument highlights the publicity coverage the case received even back in 1960, when Garza was first reported missing.
