Eight-month erection leads to malpractice lawsuit

WILMINGTON — Daniel Metzgar had a problem that wouldn’t go away.

The Newark truck driver lived with an erection that lasted about eight months – a result of a botched surgical procedure by a Wilmington urologist who performed a penile implant on him in 2009, according to a medical malpractice lawsuit being heard this week in New Castle County Superior Court.
Wherever the 44-year-old went, his condition got in the way, said Metzgar’s attorney, Michael C. Heyden. Retrieving the morning newspaper became a problem. Riding his motorcycle was, too.

Even family events became uncomfortable because, as Heyden put it, “Dan is stuck in this position.”

I can really feel for that poor guy, with the pain, embarrasment, and inconvenience he went through. And he had to have more surgery because of it. I don't blame him for sueing the doctor. If doctors want to charge a lot of money, they should produce good results. If the results aren't good, the next surgery should be free.

His scrotum swelled up to the size of a volleyball?? And he didn't call the doctor's office and say anything because he was told there "would be some swelling"??

He finally goes in to see the doctor, but then does not have the surgery??

His scrotum is "punctured by some tubing" in Niagara Falls and they then proceed to drive home to Delaware??

    Jezuz.H.Christ!!

I hate to say it, but this very situation - prolonged, continuous erection is one of the "risks of surgery" with this very type of device. And it could also happen with the second one he got put in!

It is more likely a devise malfunction than the skill or lack of skill of the surgeon. So I sure hope he is also suing the manufacturer.

It's a wild tale, for sure.

Ok.... This say so not funny, but yet hilarious at the same time. Long ago, when I was working on a med-surg unit, my coworkers and I coded an elderly gentleman with a wonky penile implant. With every chest compression, we were...... well, saluted. It was very HARD to keep a STRAIGHT face.

Metzgar had the device removed in August 2010, when tubing from the prosthesis poked out of his scrotum during a family trip. He has had the device replaced by a different doctor.
Woah. His scrotum was the size of a volley ball and he didn't go back to the doctor for FOUR MONTHS??? Seriously how does a person even go a few days like that? Apparently everyone could SEE the condition and were ridiculing him. Then 9 months later a tube actually pokes out of his scrotum during a "family trip".

This whole family must be a bit eccentric.

"Metzgar's wife added that he was teased and taunted by family members"

Nice family. What'd they give him for Christmas, a new bowlingball bag?

I happen to know the urologist in this case. He is technically excellent. I have worked with him and for him in years past. He has treated family members because he is just that good. Glad the case went his way. Normally, they will settle if there is a remote chance the doctor is liable. Obviously, there was something terribly wrong here. Lesson: Do not wait to seek medical treatment for any reason. Money was not the factor here. This doc stands by his work and would have helped this man. GMAB
