Police in Utica say they're searching for a 9-month-old boy who was last seen in late May but whose disappearance wasn't reported to authorities until this week.

Police tell local media outlets they learned about Levon Wameling's disappearance from an attorney for relatives Tuesday. The lawyer said that 27-year-old Jevon Wameling told him he'd left his son on the front porch of his Utica home late on the night of May 29 and went around to unlock the back door.

Police say Wameling said by the time he got into the house and opened the front door, the baby was gone.

Authorities say Wameling didn't report his child missing until relatives confronted him about the baby's whereabouts. Police say the child's mother was in rehab when her baby disappeared.

Jevon Wameling told police that two weeks ago he left his child unattended for a few minutes in front of his home on Jay Street. He realized he was locked out of the house and went around to the back to get inside. When he went back to the front of the house, the child was missing, he said.

When he got into the house and opened the front door, the baby, who was only wearing a diaper, was gone, he said.

But Wameling never reported his child missing until Wameling’s mother and stepfather confronted him about the baby’s whereabouts, police said. The child’s mother had entered rehab shortly before the child went missing, police said.

Police said they are interviewing friends and family for more information and trying to locate the child. Wameling is a person of interest because he didn’t report it, police said.

The child's grandmother confronted the father.

Once confronted, police say Jovan Wameling, 27, admitted the child had been missing for two weeks.

Wameling, is not being charged, but he will be questioned.

The grandparents' attorney contacted the Oneida County District Attorney's office.

Police say the Levon's mother checked into rehab for drug use around the time of the disappearance.

Apparently, dad has a criminal record...

An inmate at the county jail is accused of sending a fellow inmate to the hospital during a fight Saturday afternoon.

Sheriff’s deputies said [JL], 21, of Francis Street, Utica, was brawling with Jevon T. Wameling, 25, also of Utica, at about 2 p.m. Saturday.

<snipped by me>

Wameling has been in lockup since June 7 on a charge of weapons possession. He has since been released from the hospital and returned to jail.

So if Utica's even remotely the same as I remember it, the rumor mill will be out in full force very shortly.

Nothing too interesting on there yet, but I'll be checking back. Topix can get quite nasty in Central New York, but it's not all unsubstantiated. Maybe something sleuthable and independently verifiable will turn up.

I don't have a good feeling about this poor baby. :(

Okay, so what did the sperm donor think happened to the kid?
I could somewhat understand if Mom was scheduled to pick him up and he was gone...
Just assuming Mom had taken him without telling him...
But where exactly did the man think this baby had gone?!
