In interviews with detectives, Martinez confessed to the Florida killings and said he's committed more than 30 killings during his life.

Marion County detectives and Alabama authorities have been able to confirm at least 11 murder victims that Martinez said he killed, Marion County Detective T.J. Watts said. Authorities across the country are working to identify all of the people the suspect said he killed.

Snip....

Deputies said Martinez shot Javier Huerta and Gustavo Olivares-Rivas on Highway 19 just north of State Road 40 in the Ocala National Forest back in Nov. 8, 2006.

snip....“From his statements, he’s killed over 30 people throughout the United States so this is what he does, he’s an individual who goes around and collects debts for the cartels and kills people,” said Det. TJ Watts with the sheriff's office.

Looks like states involved so far are Ala., Fl. and Cal.

snip.....Jose Manuel Martinez, 50, of Richgrove, Calif., remains in Lawrence County Jail without bail, charged with murder in the March 4 shooting death of 32-year-old Jose Ruiz. Though Martinez worked as debt collector for both cartels and individuals and was sometimes paid to kill, the shooting of Ruiz was personal, a Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department investigator said.

Marion County investigators on Monday obtained a warrant charging Martinez with two counts of premeditated murder in the double-slaying of two construction workers, Javier Huerta, 20, and Gustavo Olivares-Rivas, 28, killed by multiple gunshot wounds and found in a pickup near the Marion-Lake County line Nov. 6, 2006.

Someone else had been arrested in the Ruiz case, but has now been released.

Another man arrested in Ruiz's death, Jaime Roman Romero, 41, Huntsville, has since been cleared. Authorities said they believe he didn't know the killing was going to take place when he drove the two from Decatur to Speake.

He says he killed the others because he was hired. However he allegedly killed Ruiz because Ruiz made remarks about Martinez's mother.

Accused killer Jose Manuel Martinez had a visit from his court appointed attorney Friday afternoon. Mike Terry tells WHNT News 19 he is preparing a defense for Martinez and has advised him to stop talking to investigators, cell mates, or anyone else for that matter.

How he was caught:

Authorities were reexamining the evidence from a cold case file dating back to 2006 in the Volusia County, Florida, double murder of construction workers Javier Huerta, 20, and Gustavo Olivares-Rivas, 28, when the DNA from a cigarette butt in a Mountain Dew can in the victim's truck turned up a positive hit on Martinez.

Martinez said he lured the men to a house by posing as someone who recently bought a house in Volusia County and wanted an estimate on some work.

Martinez said he pulled out two 9 mm handguns — each with a 15-round magazine — and forced Olivares-Rivas to call his wife to get money he had hidden in a safe buried in their back yard.

Martinez said he eventually got $170,000 from the home of Olivares-Rivas and another $40,000 from the pickup. He said he tortured Olivares-Rivas, forced them to tie up each other and then shot them.

'Mano Negra' -- confessed Valley contract killer was known, feared, but invisible

EARLIMART — Nobody knew what "Mano Negra," the Black Hand, looked like until this week. But it was common knowledge in many small farm towns in Tulare County that when a debt wasn't paid or someone got killed, he was probably involved.

With ruthless efficiency, the Black Hand acted as a contract killer since 1980. But last year, when Mano Negra killed a man in Alabama, he got sloppy. It was personal, he acknowledged to an investigator, and all those years of killing had finally caught up with Jose Manuel Martinez.

Word around Earlimart last week was that Martinez, 51, of Richgrove, will not kill anymore. In custody, he admitted to 34 killings in 12 states, said Capt. Tim McWhorter of the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office in Alabama.

Tulare County District Attorney Tim Ward held a news conference to announce that six of those slayings happened in Tulare County and two in Kern County. Another occurred in Santa Barbara County, authorities allege.

A man charged in 11 killings in California and Florida has pleaded guilty to murder in Alabama.

Court records show 52-year-old Jose Manuel Martinez pleaded guilty Thursday to shooting Jose Ruiz in Lawrence County in March 2013. A judge sentenced him to 50 years in prison...

Tucker says Martinez will likely be sent to Florida first to face charges there.

The local state attorney's office decided to extradite Martinez to Marion County in November. He arrived at the Marion County Jail last month.

Because Martinez already has nine consecutive life sentence and a 50-year sentence on the books from his previous trials, Ric Ridgway, chief assistant state attorney, said in November that prosecutors will pursue the death penalty in Marion County.

California drug cartel serial killer says he murdered man in Marion County 32 years ago

SALEM, Ore. -- The body found near Horseshoe Lake 20 miles north of Salem in the fall of 1986 bore little clues.

The man's body was both decomposed by the rain-drenched earth and mummified by the sun. He was unidentifiable beyond a handful of crudely etched tattoos.

Investigators were confounded about who he was and how he died.

But they were certain of one thing: He didn't end up dead near the lake of his own accord.

The man's hands were bound. Marion County Detective Ralph Nicholson speculated he'd been killed elsewhere then dumped at the lake.

Much of the evidence had been wiped away by the elements. The medical examiner couldn't even tell whether the man had been shot, stabbed or beaten to death.

Never had Nicholson come across a murderer who'd left such a cold trail.
