Domestic Violence Victim FIRED from Teaching!

he went to jail on two felony charges and who knows what he will do when he gets out - guy sounds like a total psycho

I think the school is right to protect everyone else there

society would be up in arms if he came back and hurt other children or staff and they also have a right to feel like they are in a safe environment

it's not her fault but it's not theirs either

I so agree. Ya know it shocks me regularly when people struck with hardships do not feel like they should suffer the consequences of said hardships!

I'm sorry this lady is experiencing this and she will have some tough times with it. Every one around her is not supposed to suffer her hardships, they are supposed to help/supports her.

Sorry to be OT , but I saw an article this morning with a mom upset over her son sitting to the side in a wheel chair in a school picture. While I 100% sympathize with his plight in life everyone around him cannot fix it.

It is part of the struggle.;
JMO Off my soapbox.

I read about this the other day and was speechless with fury.

Because there is a potential danger, then yes, I can see removing her fom her teaching job. But catholic social and labor teaching would tell these admins that what the ethical thing to do is NOT fire her, but to find her a position that is not in a school environment.

As it is, they are victimizing her (not to mntuon her children, who are dependnt upon her!) another time. SHAME on them! :furious:

I'm appalled that a victim is being further victimized because of an out of control criminal!

It's obvious to me the laws and consequences for this man's behavior are not sufficient. I'm sure everyone in that town would agree. IMO it's the local or state governments job to see to it that crime victims can go to a job that she's had for over a decade to support her family.

They need to put armed guard outside, find a reason to keep him locked up, clamp a GPS device on him that sends electric shocks to his body if he gets within a mile of her! Something!

Wait-couldn't they just secretly move her to a position in a different diocese without telling anyone? Then if someone gets hurt, they could just lie and say they never knew anything.

All joking aside, though, it's a tough situation created by her abuser. I really don't see how the school can be villainized. I pray this woman finds her way safely.

It's not her fault, but I can't fault the school either. Safety of the children is their responsibility.

Children should never be put at risk. No one would want to pay tuition for kids to be exposed to that. She ought to move far away and teach at a juvenile facility or where there are officers with guns if she's really afraid of the ex. A lawsuit will keep her around like a sitting duck for the guy in prison.

The school absolutely made the right decision. They did not make her a victim. Her ex-husband made her a victim.

In a perfect world, LE would be able to protect her and others at the school, but they can't guarantee that. Unfortunately for her, a school is not the place for her. Sad for her, but I'd rather she look at other options than read about another school killing tragedy in the news.

And moving her to another school location is not an option and I hope they aren't pressured or ordered to do this. He could easily track her down.

People are overlooking the fat that this is a Catholic school. You might very well support their decision to remove the teacher from the school for the safety of the students - I do too. However, as a Catholic institution, the school and diocese should be expected to operate within the church's teachings on labor, workers' rights, and employers' duties, which very clearly set out that people have a right to a job, a fair wage, safe working conditions, and that the employer must provide a safe job, and cannot unjustly fire a worker, and must take into consideration the dependents of the worker.

I am over-simplifying, but must because this is not a theology debate forum. Suffice it to say that as a sometimes-Catholic, I am upset by the failure here to adhere to the church's own teachings in how this worker was treated. I cannot believe that another position cannot be found - even a temporary one, until she possibly finds another teaching position - for this teacher that does not involve being in a school environment. Especially when they've proven so adept at shuffling creepy priests around! :furious:

I hope that she can find another job and be safe, but since this is in the news that might can be difficult. Also he can still come to the school simply because she worked there. I hope they have good security.

i hope it won't become a commonly accepted practice to fire DV victims because it's a win-win for the abuser. Just show up where she works and other people will finish the ruining of her life for you.

Quite an indictment of law enforcement in that area. Essentially the school is saying that LE are not capable of doing their job and in spite of due process, they consider the students under threat of violence.

I bet LE is thrilled.

There are actually a number of things the school can do.

Before you side completely with the school, I am willing to bet that they have risky behavior and individuals within the school system. I am willing to believe that they are taking advantage of their unique position as a private institution to kick this teacher to the curb. Call me cynical, but I think there is a bigger story here like they are trying to balance a budget.

What about students who have a parent with an RO or who are in the middle of a scorched earth divorce? What about children with family members who are convicted criminals or drunk drivers? These situations pose a risk as well. Let's take Sandy Hook for example-even if they had a threat assessment team in place in the district, would they have picked up on Adam Lanza? Pick a situation where there has been violence in a school-overwhelmingly it has been driven by a student.

I am not buying it. I think the situation is being spun by the school. I think they want a knee jerk reaction from the general public that says keep my kids safe at all cost. There is something more here and I dont think it has anything to do with this teacher-I think she is collateral damage.

You are absolutely right. This school is not to be commended, imvho.

I hope she lives and I hope she is able to carve a life elsewhere. Her ex just won big. He was just given the keys to the kingdom-even society wont protect her.

WTH have we become?

Every school should have a lock down safety plan in place, in the event some nut shows up. In this case, everyone knows what he looks like and that he shouldn't be on school property.

I agree they were looking for the knee jerk reaction.

The fact that its a catholic school makes what they did to her all the more sickening!

I look forward to getting an idea from you as to how firing this teacher and how excluding Miles from his class photo are examples of people being supportive of hardships.

Miles, the boy in the photo, is grinning from ear to ear. His life is apparently not at all a hardship to him.

LINK HERE TO MILES

The hardship in both of these stories, imo, is the pure meanness of the adults involved who would rather view those in need as burdensome than lifting them up and teaching inclusion.

The school has placed all blame on the Lifetouch photographer who finally conceded that the photo was badly done.

The Catholic School that fired the victim has affixed all blame on LE, the courts, the victim and the perp.

I think that the case on behalf of the teacher will have to hinge on any anti bullying policy within the school. If they have a policy that includes giving into the bully, the school will be golden. I realize that they operate on a fire at will...but at a minimum they will be dragged through the courts.

I hope this teacher lives to see her settlement from them.

The children were ordered out of the school too. This school has set a dangerous precedent IMO. How many other children are there who have violent parents who make threats? Do they all lose their right to an education?

This, along with the case of the escort shot for $150, makes me shake my head in disgust. Violence obviously works, for all our pretensions about not giving in to terrorism.
