Calgary mayor to flood evacuees: 'Gather your valuables and go'

Two rivers in Calgary flooding and one is about to crest within an hour.

Over 100 thousand residents evacuated. Many smaller communities already damaged and continue to flood.

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi is urging residents affected by flooding evacuation orders to "gather your valuables and go," while telling the city as a whole to avoid all non-essential travel on Friday.

"The message tonight is that we are still expecting that the worst has not yet come in terms of the flow," Nenshi told CBC News early Friday in a telephone interview from an emergency operations centre. "The dams will crest on both the Bow and Elbow river over the course of the next little while and the downstream impacts will be significant.

"If you live in any of the neighbourhoods that have now been affected by the mandatory evacuation it is time to leave. Gather your valuables and go," said Nenshi, who returned early from an economic development trip in Ontario to deal with the flooding response.

Many sequential photos of Kevon and his cat Momo swimming to safety. I saw these photos last night and they really freaked me out.

Thinking what would I take if I had less than an hour to grab my valuables and go. I know I'd forget some family heirlooms packed away.

Prayers for the people in the flood zone.

Oh wow!

Backyards turned into a raging, and I mean raging river! I don't think I've ever seen flood waters move so fast. Almost expected Olympic Kayakers to sped down the river. A backyard fence suspended over the muddy water where the former backyards were.

Little Cougar Creek became a raging river in Canmore, AB.
Wow.

Most of the city is closed ... University is closed, schools closed, downtown closed, zoo being evacuated, bridges closed, trans Canada highway closed in spots ... I bet there will be some good photo opps today.

I'm just outside of Calgary. I was born here and my heart hurts for my city right now.

twitter has lots of pictures at #yycflood.

Prime Minister is on his way to tour the area! Must be serious.

Osprey nest ... at the top of the power pole that is now in the middle of the swollen river.

The purple line represents the original location of the river.

CALGARY— RCMP say as many as four people may have died in heavy flooding that has swept through much of southern Alberta.
Police say two men were seen floating lifeless in the Highwood River near the hard-hit community of High River on Thursday, but no bodies have been found.
They also say a woman who was swept away with her camper has not been located.
And it's not clear whether a man who was seen falling out of a canoe in the High River area was able to climb back in.
