NEW YORK (Reuters) - Investigators have found what they believe are human remains in a search of the former home of late New York mobster Jimmy Burke, suspected mastermind of the 1978 Lufthansa cargo heist, New York City Medical Examiner spokeswoman Ellen Borakove told Reuters on Thursday.

She said the medical examiner's Office is checking material FBI agents scouring the Queens home found a day earlier, and it appears they are human remains.

"I think they are," Borakove said, declining to comment further........

Any guesses as to who it is?

Not yet....

FBI spokesman Jim Margolin said once the remains are determined to be human, the next step is to identify the dead person.

Here's another article with some more info on Burke:

Possible human remains have been found by FBI and NYPD organized crime investigators digging at the home of a former mobster who inspired Robert DeNiro's character in the movie "Goodfellas."

Law enforcement officials told NBC 4 New York Wednesday that the potential bones were found buried in the ground, along with other evidence now being sent for testing. .......more.....

They are saying it is not related to Hoffa. But it seems an awfully big coincidence that they would go digging around there now.

They got a tip:

........Investigators arrived at the red-brick terraced house in the Ozone Park neighbourhood of Queens this week armed with shovels and pneumatic drills, after an informant reportedly claimed a long-missing mob associate might be buried in the basement or back garden.........

In 1978 Burke allegedly masterminded the robbery of almost $6m (£3.8m) from a Lufthansa freight area at New York’s John F Kennedy Airport, one of the biggest cash thefts in US history. He is believed to have murdered most of his accomplices afterwards, fearing they would confess. The cash was never found, and Burke was never prosecuted for the heist..........

Burke was suspected of several other killings in his lifetime, and gained a reputation for burying his victims in familiar locations, including Robert’s Lounge, the saloon he owned not far from his Queens home.

Henry Hill, the Lucchese associate who later informed on Burke to the FBI, described the saloon as Burke’s private cemetery.

“Jimmy buried over a dozen bodies… under the bocce courts,” Hill wrote in his memoir, A Goodfella’s Guide to New York.

From November 2015:

Jerome Asaro, 56, pleaded guilty last October to accessory to murder after the fact, and appeared in court in late March to receive his term for digging up the remains of mob associate Paul Katz, which had been interred under an Ozone Park home since 1969.

Vincent Asaro’s indictment included the Katz murder, because federal investigators have long believed that Asaro and Burke whacked him. Some time in the 1980s, Vincent Asaro ordered his son to move Katz’s bones from the home, which was owned by Burke, because investigators were looking into Katz’s mysterious disappearance.

According to the New York Post, federal agents acting on a tip descended on the Ozone Park house in 2013 and found Katz’s partial remains.
