Investigators confirm they've arrested a person of interest in Bridgette Gearen's July 2007 Crystal Beach murder on unrelated charges while they work to build a case against the man and others authorities believe were involved in her sexual assault and strangulation.

Thanks for posting the update, Nutkin. This case is one that really stuck with me. Here's a link from July 2007.

Campers awoke to find Gearen's bruised body near the water's edge at about 6:20 a.m. Sunday, about 100 yards from the beach house where she and her 2-year-old daughter were staying with friends, Tuttoilmondo said.
"She was very brutally sexually assaulted," he said

...friends told deputies they and Gearen had planned to take a drive on the beach shortly before midnight Saturday."She walked downstairs, they heard the gate close," and she was gone by the time her friends followed her outside shortly after, Tuttoilmondo said.

This article is from a year ago. LE was able to collect good evidence, but testing has taken years to complete.

A big break in the case came when investigators talked to some people who had gathered at a bonfire on the night of the murder. They reported they had heard a woman scream and get into a dark colored SUV. However, the side of the vehicle blocked their view from seeing if she was forced.
Since then, the vehicle has been located and is “on radar” according to Hansen.
The suspects are being carefully watched as well.

"We feel very comfortable it was multiple suspects, primarily from out of state, who may have possibly hooked up with a local person from (the Crystal Beach) area," he said.

The local suspect no longer is living around Crystal Beach since Hurricane Ike struck Galveston on Sept. 13, 2008, but Hansen said he knows where the suspect lives.

Nope, not a word since July 3-4.

They are four men in their twenties who police believe pulled up in a truck in the moments she was alone and suddenly pulled her inside.

Witnesses, young kids out for the night, say they heard her scream and saw the truck pull away.

&#8220;Twenty-five minutes later that same vehicle went back by going eastbound at a very high rate of speed,&#8221; said Lt. Hansen.
The next morning, Bridgette&#8217;s body was found.

Galveston County investigators say they now have a person of interest in Gearen's murder, a man currently in prison on an unrelated charge. His name is not being released at this time. Investigators believe several men were involved in Gearen's murder, and hope the person of interest will lead them to the others.

I wish something would happen with this case. I do not understand why complete silence after the article stating the person of interest was currently in prison on unrelated charges. I wonder if this is the same person of interest that supposedly was the "local" that LE thinks several other suspects hooked up with but were from out of town. The silence for so long is frustrating. ullhair:

I assume there wasn't any DNA at all obtained from her body? Not even under her fingernails? I read that she apparently fought hard for her life so I cannot imagine she did not scratch one of the person of interests. She was raped but no semen found?

An update as to the questioning of these individuals would be helpful. Is LE still trying to obtain evidence? Still watching the people of interest? Is the person whose name was withheld and was jailed on unrelated charges still in jail or has he been released? :dunno: Lots of questions that I hope can be answered soon. This was a gruesome rape and murder of a young mother. She and her family deserves justice. Her young daughter is growing up with not much memory of her mother when she was alive, her being so young when this happened. Very sad and very frustrating. I pray for answers. raying:

There are no real developments in Bridgette's case, but here's an update of what's going on now and a link to a video her mom made about her life.

A lead investigator in the case tells Fox 4 News they have multiple persons of interest in the case, including one person already behind bars on unrelated charges. He said they’re not giving up on the case and they’re close to cracking it. Now, they meet with the district attorney on a regular basis. . .
