Eight people have been held captive in a north Houston home, and some for as many as 10 years, police said Friday.

Four are men between the ages of 50 and 80 and the others are women who police characterized as suffering from mental illness.

One person has been detained for questioning. No charges have been filed.

Given the ages and that some may have been mentally ill I'm betting this will be a 'care giver' stealing their checks.

JMO and all that Jazz.

(CNN) — Eight people have been held captive at a north Houston house, with some perhaps dwelling in what’s described as a “prison room” and one man possibly kept against his will for a decade, police said.

Another Linda Weston. Taking advantage of the disabled in order to get their checks. Then has to restrain or imprison them because they don't feed them.

"One of them seemed to think he was picked up off the street and brought here," said HPD Sgt. JW McCoy. "In exchange for beer and cigarettess and a place to stay, he had to turn over his Social Security check."

One of the men told Eyewitness News he had been staying at the house for about six months, and while he had no desire to leave, he did say living conditions were not good.

A woman in the neighborhood told Houston NBC station KPRC that another neighbor saw a man in the window of home motioning with his hands that he was hungry.

She said neighbors have seen up to 20 people coming and going from the home over the years, and the people living there would sometimes ask for help. She thought they were just helping people.

(CNN) - Texas authorities are investigating whether eight people were held captive for years in a north Houston house, with some perhaps dwelling in what has been described as a "prison room"

At least four men have told investigators they were held against their will, and authorities are looking into whether four women found in the house were also being held, police said.

The men are between the ages of 50 and 80, police said. Investigators were still trying to determine the ages and identities of the women, who police characterized as suffering from mental illness. A man has been detained for questioning. No charges have been filed.

According to KTRK-TV, police believe the men, malnourished kept in a converted garage, may have been homeless and held at the home for their Social Security and Veteran's Administration checks.

Neighbour Monica Booker told the Chronicle a mother, son, daughter and granddaughter live in the home, and that the son has told people that others stay there and he gets their Social Security cheques.

The Chronicle reports that state welfare cheques were, indeed, sent to the home.

I figured that was the case. Utterly deplorable.

Investigators also are looking into whether four women found at the home were captives, she said.

Authorities are still trying to determine the ages and identities of the women, three of whom police characterized as suffering from a combination of physical disabilities and mental illness. The fourth was identified as a caregiver, Silva said.

Still no word on the identity of the man who was allegedly holding the others captive.

And some media seems to indicate the women were being held and had mental or emotional problems. Still others indicate that the women were family.

And he is a sex offender and has been cited for failure to register in the past.

The grandson of the owner of a house in Houston where four malnourished men were found Friday has been charged with two felony counts in the case, police said Saturday.

Walter Renard Jones, 31, was charged with injury to the elderly by act and injury to the elderly by omission, Houston police spokeswoman Jodi Silva told CNN.

Jones is the grandson of Essie Mae Scranton, who owns the modest single-story home on Whitecastle Lane, police said.
