I can't get my head around it either. This is so very strange. Clearly a vicious attack on his driveway - blood, a ripped shirt and a broken baseball bat left behind. I can't help but wonder if this is a case of mistaken identity? AFAIK there is no mention of gang involvement, at least not that I've seen. Very odd.

He was married with 2 adult children. Police stated he was a "stand up guy" and have no idea why this happened to him.

3 Arrests made:

Honestly, I'm totally shocked by this news. All I've heard on local media is that Mr Padilla was a good guy and I really, really believed this was a case of mistaken identity.

From the newscast I just watched this minute on KTLA5 Los Angeles (not available online just yet) it seems these were close family friends and the Padilla family is devastated. I hope that's OK to post - I'll link when it becomes available.

Perhaps I had it right when I asked if this could be a love triangle ... but it looks like with a twist. The daughter's former boyfriend!

Maybe Dad came between their relationship 'cause he did not approve? Fathers can be very protective, and daughters---well, sometimes the "bad boy" is such a lure: especially with what the media sends as messages glorifying 'gangsta' this and that.

Or maybe it was a burglary 'cause they knew how much cash he typically carried and his daily routine?

I feel so sorry for his family. Tragic!

FONTANA, Calif. (KABC) -- One of the men arrested in the kidnap and murder of a Fontana man has committed suicide in jail, police said Thursday.

Authorities say Richard Gonzalez, an 18-year-old Fontana resident, was found dead in his jail cell at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga just before 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Gonzalez and two others were supposed to be arraigned Thursday morning.

A 21-year-old Fontana man was sentenced 25 years to life in state prison in the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend’s father, in which the victim was robbed, beaten and stabbed before his car was set on fire, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

In November 2016, Edward Morales was convicted of killing 40-year-old Alejandro Padilla — which included convictions for first degree murder, carjacking, robbery and kidnapping for the purpose of robbery...

Alma Quezada, Morales’ 41-year-old mother, was arrested as an accessory after the fact of murder and was sentenced to 19 days in county jail in September 2015. That same month, a man named Victor Morales pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact, though prosecutors did not specify what his sentence was.
