Australia - Anthony Jones, 20, Townsville QLD, 1982 - started Missing Persons Week

Anthony Jones's disappearance started Missing Persons Week, but truth still eludes his family

    July 28, 2013

THE secrets of his death are buried somewhere in Queensland while his killer has walked among us for the past 30 years.
But the family of Anthony Jones, whose tenacity and relentless search for the truth sparked the creation of National Missing Persons week, say they will get their man.

Tomorrow marks the 25th anniversary for Missing Persons Week and an example of what desperation looks like when a loved one goes missing.

    $250,000 REWARD

The Minister for Police and Corrective Services has approved a reward of $250,000 be offered for information which leads to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the disappearance and suspected murder of Anthony John Jones.

In addition, an appropriate indemnity from prosecution will be recommended for any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the crime, who first gives such information.

The allocation of the $250,000 reward will be at the sole discretion of the Commissioner of the Police Service.

Anthony John Jones of Perth, Western Australia, had been travelling in Queensland since September 1982. He hitch-hiked from place to place, meeting his brother from time to time at pre-arranged points. After visiting Brisbane, Mackay and Airlie Beach, Anthony John Jones left Townsville on 28 October 1982, to travel to Cairns, having arranged to meet his brother at Mount Isa about a week later. He was known to have been in Townsville again on 03 November 1982 when he telephoned his home in Perth and indicated his intention of travelling to Mount Isa. He has not been seen or heard from since that time, and it is suspected that he has been murdered.

Any member of the public with information which could assist Police is asked to contact:

    the Homicide Investigation Group, Brisbane, Phone (07) 3364 6122;
    any Police Station; or
    Crime Stoppers, Phone 1800 333 000.

    From December 2012:

Did Tony meet with tainted former police superintendent Mervyn Henry Stevenson at the Rising Sun Hotel in Townsville? He had been seen at the hotel with an older man and a witness description and sketch of the man matched that of the officer.

Or did he continue hitchhiking and make it as far as Cloncurry where a camp site was found some time after the report of a disappearance?...

Critical of the police investigation launched at the time of his brother's disappearance, Brian says a key witness who claimed to have seen Tony on the outskirts of Townsville was not interviewed for more than two decades. He said other evidence and statements had gone missing in that time.

"Kevin Wright and John Eastaughffe were friends who grew up together in Hughenden, and three women have made allegations linking the pair to Mr Jones' disappearance.

Mr Wright's ex-partner Natalie Parker told 60 Minutes the men shared a close bond.

"I noticed that Kevin to me, his behaviour was different when Johnny was around," Ms Parker said.

"He said Johnny and I have done things together that no-one will ever know about."

Ms Parker said Mr Wright allegedly confessed three times in their 18-year relationship to disposing of a human body.

She claimed Mr Wright told her a truck driver had died and he helped dispose of the body.

"I believe they put the body into the burning pits and set it on fire," Ms Parker said. "
