"What happened to little Edna Masters? Kamloops Mounties open cold case into 1960 disappearance"?

"With new forensic techniques available, RCMP are making a public plea in an effort to finally solve the disappearance of a toddler who went missing 53 years ago.

On July 3, 1960, police were called after 21-month-old Edna Bette-Jean Masters went missing from a neighbour’s home in the Red Lake area, about 70 kilometres northwest of Kamloops.

The young girl was never found and police could not find any evidence in the case.

She was last seen playing with friends at a neighbour’s house"

" The young girl, who had curly blonde hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion, was wearing a green bonnet, a pink T-shirt and faded overalls at the time. She had an oval-shaped burn scar on her left arm, which investigators believe would still be there today.

When Masters was reported missing, the surrounding area was searched extensively. RCMP officers used an airplane and a police dog and enlisted the help of volunteers, but they were unable to turn up any trace of Masters.

One of the only leads was a sighting of an unfamiliar 1959 Chevrolet car with Alberta plates that was seen nearby with a man and woman in their late 20s. The car had either "cat eye" or "bat wing" tail lights, the RCMP said.

Investigators have never been able to determine the identities of the couple or whether they were connected to Masters' disappearance.

Masters' mother and two siblings are still alive and still wondering what happened to the young girl, said Bush.

Bush said police hope the attention to the case might prompt someone to remember a detail that could be related, no matter how seemingly insignificant, and contact police"

"A half-century later, you’d think the trail would be even colder — but modern forensics mean B.C. Mounties are actually more hopeful of solving the case now, whether through DNA matches or age-enhanced photographs.

Or maybe someone out there who knows the truth is finally ready to speak.

“We have hopes we can solve it in one form or another, and at least bring closure to the family,” said RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush.

Thus, the file on Bette-Jean Masters has been reopened — for Alice, that’s meant giving police a sample of blood so her DNA can be cross-referenced against a federal DNA databank, including criminals and recovered bodies.

But the real jab is talking about her baby girl again, long after she turned her grief into silence, and then a stony resolve not to let it happen again. Her children remember her as overprotective, though it was for good reason.

Alice is finally talking publicly about Bette-Jean, who’d now be 55 years old, because she and her late husband Maurice always believed their daughter was taken, and is probably alive somewhere.

This is a chance at an answer that’s eluded them for a lifetime".

She was at a friend's home when she disappeared? That's it? No other information? Were there other children there? Were those friends investigated? Was there a pond, river, lake nearby? A well? Anything potentially dangerous for an unattended toddler? Who saw the strange couple and vehicle? How does the sighting even relate to her disappearance?

There may be very little information on this case but at least they should release the little bit that there is!

No wonder this case is still cold.

I googled 1959 Chevrolet. You can see some models here:

B.C. Mounties reopen half-century old cold case of missing toddler Edna Bette-Jean Masters

“I just really want her to come home.”

It’s the same wish Alice Masters has quietly made every day for the past 53 years, that her little girl might finally return home.

[snip]

There was little for police to go on.

Tiny footprints leading towards the town post office; sightings of unfamiliar 1959 Chevrolet Impala-style car with Alberta plates, driven by a man and woman in their late 20s.

[snip]

Bette-Jean was last seen playing with other kids in a family friend’s yard, but when the children returned to the house, Bette-Jean wasn’t with them.

Her brother, a young child himself, told his mom “they took her.”

Little Edna Bette, is so cute, hoping that the couple who may have been seen nearby,
also thought she was adorable, and scooped her up to raise as their own!

I wonder if they ever compared DNA to Becky Sue Turner/Lori Ruff???

Thinking that surely after all these years a body would have turned up if little Edna was deceased. imo.
Wonder if any women miscarried at the hospital when Edna, or her siblings were born?

Details of Disappearance
On July 3, 1960, police received a report of a lost child in the Red Lake area, 45 miles Northwest of Kamloops.

21-month-old Edna Bette-Jean Masters, known to the family as Bette-Jean, was last seen playing with family and friends at a friends residence.

Edna Bette-Jean Masters was never found and no evidence of what happened to her was located.

In 1960, the area was searched extensively by volunteers, police, airplane and police dog. The search included the yard, surrounding forests, ponds and roadways.

The RCMP have also attempted to identify and wished to speak to the male and female who were seen in the area in a rust colored 1959 Chevrolet Car with "cat eye" or "bat wing" style tail lights and with Alberta plates. The couple is described as being in their late twenties."

Kamloops RCMP Searching for Toddler Who Went Missing in 1960

Investigators made another plea to the public in August 2013. Since then, RCMP have used forensic art services to create an age progression drawing to show what Bette-Jean might look like today. The drawing was created using the photos that existed of Bette-Jean at the time of her disappearance, as well as photos of her sibling, mother, and father. To complete the sketch, the artist looks at various facial bone structures and the overall shape.

Still unsolved, still devastating families: A look at B.C.'s many missing and murdered persons cases

Another historical B.C. case involves the disappearance of toddler Edna Bette-Jean Masters, who was wearing a green bonnet and pink T-shirt when she vanished while playing at a friend’s house near Kamloops in July 1960. A massive search for the 21-month-old girl, who went by her middle name Bette-Jean, turned up no clues, the RCMP said in 2013 while seeking leads in the cold case.

Bette-Jean, who had curly blond hair, green eyes and an oval-shaped burn scar on her left arm, could still be alive today, as no evidence of her death was found, the RCMP said. An unfamiliar car with Alberta plates driven by a young couple was seen in the area, but police in 1960 found no answers when they pursued that lead.
