UK ∙ Thieves snatch priceless 500-year-old panels from rood in rural Devon church

Sacrilege! Thieves snatch priceless, 500-year-old panels of saints from rural church. (Daily Mail)
Two priceless medieval panels depicting saints have been stolen from a remote church.

A third was damaged when thieves cut the artworks from a choir screen at 15th-century Holy Trinity church in Torbryan, Devon.
    ---
‘Paintings of God, Mary and the Apostles are two a penny in English churches, which is why it is possible these thieves targeted lesser saints as they are much rarer,’ said Dr Neil Rushton.
    ---
‘This is the best example of this type of medieval art in this country. They are as unique and priceless as a Turner or a Rembrandt and are irreplaceable. They are intrinsic to this building and the theft devalues the whole church.’

The panels, about 18in by 6in, were part of a series of 40 depicting God, Mary, the Apostles and other saints set in a rood or choir screen that was a common feature in medieval church architecture.

Pre-reformation church... Maybe it's some of my Catholic brethren stealing our art back.

BBC account here, with video: Torbryan screen panels stolen from Holy Trinity church
    ---
The two stolen panels show images of St Victor of Marseilles and St Margaret. Another panel that has been damaged carries an image of a female saint.

They make up one of the few screens to survive the "puritanical zeal" of the Reformation and are one of the best examples of their kind left in Britain, the CCT said.

Yes, they apparently did. I think the dissolution focused more on monasteries than on parish churches, didn't it?

Thanks mostly to that nasty Cromwell, a great deal of England's cultural treasure was lost in the dissolutions. Not just the art in the buildings (altar pieces, etc) but in the libraries that were burned and books that were destroyed.
