An investigation into the mysterious disappearance 23 years ago of Dannette and Jeannette Millbrooks has been reopened by a Georgia sheriff who discovered the case files were lost and the missing person report closed.

The 16-year-old fraternal twins disappeared without a trace on March 18, 1990, while walking home from a convenience store in Augusta.

But unbeknownst to the girls' family, investigators have not looked at the case for more than two decades.

What a strange disappearance, of twins -- and how sad.

From one of the links above:

...Earlier this year, she contacted Roundtree, who asked investigators to look into the case. Sturgis said Maj. Scott Peebles called to say the unsettling matter of the case being closed on “hearsay” prompted investigators to reopen it.
bbm: Well, I'd say, that definitely should have prompted a reopening!!

More from the same link:

When Shanta Sturgis was older she began her own quest to find her sisters. When the requests for the sheriff’s office to reopen the case went unanswered, Sturgis began searching for other ways. She looked on the Internet to see if their names appeared. She contacted the FBI and even Oprah Winfrey and John Walsh from America’s Most Wanted, but no one offered help.

“When you don’t have the help you want, you just start to give up,” she said. “It’s just hard to not know.”

Wouldn't it be GREAT if Websleuthers could help Shanta find her sisters??!!

A thought -- at 16, could they have been planning to meet up with some young men after they left the store, and something went terribly bad?

From your link, mysteriew -- THIS is what is really sad to me (bbm in quote):

...According to Roundtree, the original case files are missing and not long after the twins disappeared, they were taken off the national database for missing children.

"For some unknown reason they were removed from the system, but there is no report indicating why they were removed. So for the last 20 years they have not been in the system," said Roundtree, who is newly appointed. ...

Was this just someone's careless error/s? It seems like several "errors" strung together -- it makes me wonder, almost, if someone in the department for some reason did not want any searching for these young women...?

Of course, I would love to have these two turn up alive and well somewhere, but I just am struck by the sad thought that no WSers, etc. -- pretty much NO ONE, for 20 years -- has been searching for the sisters among UIDs.

It does seem very odd that they weren't in the system for 20 years, especially a case involving twins. It's not like your ordinary case, it definitely stands out. And the original case files are missing too? LE didn't even notice they weren't in the system, so I guess they haven't even spent any time or resources on the case since the girls went missing.

Doesn't seem like this case got much attention, and the way it was handled is horrible. Hopefully one day this family can find out what happened to these twin girls!

This case really bothers me. What happened to them? And how did their case "go missing" for so long!

I am from Augusta.
I cannot beLIEve this case has been so badly handled and closed. Well, yes I can.

I pray Roundtree starts a fire under a few butts and gets the investigation going again.

Beautiful Dannette and Jeannette deserve justice just as much as they deserve to be brought home. I cannot imagine what their family has been going through.
Their voices need to be heard, loud and clear.

Podcast will detail struggles of missing twin’s family in search for closure

Shanta Sturgis last saw her older twin sisters more than 27 years ago when they walked out of their Olive Road home to go to their godfather’s house.

It was March 18, 1990, when 15-year-old s Jeannette Latrice Millbrooke and Dannette Millbrooke disappeared .

“Earlier that day, my mom had sent them to Church’s Chicken to go get some food for the household for us to eat for lunch, cause she didn’t feel like cooking that day,” Sturgis said last week. “On their way back from there they were on their way home and when they got home they told my mom there was some guy in a white van following them.”

After eating lunch, Sturgis said the girls left the house again to head to their godfather’s house. It was about 3 p.m.

The first two episodes of the podcast are available, the only way I know to get to them is through the links on the Facebook page for them. The next episode should be any day now if the pace stays the same.
