DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — A suspect was in custody after reports of gunfire at an Atlanta-area elementary school Tuesday, the school chief said, with television footage showing young students running out the school being escorted by teachers and police. Michael Thurmond told The Associated Press he had no reports of injuries and that all students and teachers are accounted for and safe...

I hope and pray that this incident is the first, last, and only shooting in a school during the 2013-14 academic year. School hasn't even begun in many parts of the country. It is truly frightening to think that children can't be safe when they're in what should be a safe environment. Please, dear G-d, keep our youngsters safe as they begin a new academic year. :please:

They just had the lady that talked him down, on ABC evening news. Bless her heart!

(CNN) -
A gunman who opened fire at a Georgia elementary school on Tuesday was armed with an AK-47 "and a number of other weapons," police said.

The shooter barricaded himself in the school's front office with employees before eventually surrendering to police, DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander told reporters.

No one was injured, authorities said. Police are investigating whether a vehicle the shooter parked outside the school contained explosives, Alexander said...

Thank God we have NO ONE killed, or even harmed physically.. How so very easily we could be here on this thread mourning the tragic, senseless loss of innocent babes as we did for Sandy Hook.. I'm thanking God that today's outcome was the best outcome one could hope for in such a terrifying and senseless situation brought on by someone obviously severely disturbed and waaaaay past the point of needing help.. Why are these teens/young adults just continuing to slide through the cracks wrt what IMO is severe mental illness that did not just appear this morning when this 19yo woke up ...

Seriously? This is one of the biggest stories of the year, or should be. A school clerk single-handedly talked down a violent, deranged, would-be mass murderer thus saving countless children, employee and officer lives, using incredible grace and calm and wisdom. Yet it merits almost no replies on Websleuths?

Even though the full 911 tape in which you can hear her entire incredible act of bravery and heroism unfold, is available?

How did I know that the story of the teens in OK who killed a white man for fun would be a top story instead? I had a feeling but I had no idea that the Georgia hero story would be buried down so deep, even behind historical cases.

This makes me so sad and tells me some things I don't want to know about how we think as a nation. Newtown averted by one, phenomenal lady and.....nothing.

Not sure it was exactly like that. A woman saw the man and overheard him as she left the building. He said something to the effect of "I am not here to harm any students or faculty, I want you to call the police".

Oddly she left and was driving home (without having called 911) when she heard the shots being fired.

Regardless if her statements are true he did NOT go there intending to commit mass murder, he specifically said that from the get go.

I think it was on Anderson Cooper's show last night, he played the entire 911 tape, it was astounding. The woman deserves a medal!

Thank goodness this guy was talked down. His photo reminds me soooo much of Austin Sigg.

This happened in my metro area. I listened to parts of the 911 tape, she was simply amazing! I definitely hope she gets some sort of honor recognition for this.

She was right there when he was firing shots, from what I can tell! It's on the 911 call. She was wondering if she could run -- apparently she was being held hostage at this point and had already conveyed a request or two to the cops over her cellphone -- but decided it was too risky.

I probably would've been a basket case.

That said, there are some people this sort of negotiation would work with, and some it wouldn't. The Fort Hood shooter, the Colorado movie shooter, those sort of people, I don't think even the most sympathetic and level-headed person could have talked them out of it.

She is a true hero. I might imagine everyone is relieved there is nothing to talk about and that is why there is no discussion on this thread. I'm originally from Connecticut so the Newtown tragedy is always in my thoughts as we had friends with children in that school. Thanks for bringing this thread up to the top. jmo

Antoinette Tuff is a Hero to me. I listened to the 911 call on my way to work this a.m., and I was amazed at the calm way she handled the situation. The radio DJ's discussed what a Hero she was, also. I wish all the best to Ms. Tuff, who shared her personal tragedies with the gunman to keep him calm. I think I'll get a card to send her from me and my husband, and let her know how much she's appreciated, and that I think she is one "Tuff" cookie!

I agree! Antoinette Tuff is one phenomenal lady! My DH and I were talking about what a hero she is. And we don't use "hero" lightly. I have been reading this thread but just did not post so now I am to show support for Ms Tuff. I could only find snippets on- line of the 911 call but just found out about the Anderson Cooper piece today so we watched that. She is amazing and I refuse to let any Debbie Downers ruin my feelings of gratitude (they couldn't if they tried) for Ms Tuff.
