SC - Cheryl Davis, 17, West Ashley, 4 July 1979

Police scour West Ashley woods for clues to 26-year-old cold case
Jailhouse informant said missing woman's remains can be found at site

Charleston police and forensic specialists dug through a wooded patch of West Ashley on Monday, sifting through dirt by hand as they searched for the remains of a person missing for more than two decades.
More than a dozen police officers, crime scene workers and death investigators descended on the area after receiving information that the remains could be found in woods off Arlington Drive.

Capt. Gary Tillman, who supervises the detective division, would not disclose the source, but said investigators were able to substantiate enough information to get a search warrant for the property, which is owned by a private trust.

Sources said the tip came from a jailhouse informant who claimed the remains were those of a young woman who went missing in the area 26 years ago. The informant told authorities she was slain and her body deposited in the woods, sources said.

Tillman would not disclose details of the case except to say that "it's an old case that goes back in time." Investigators reportedly used ground-penetrating radar and a dog trained to sniff out cadavers to help pinpoint a likely area where the remains could be found.

The dig was expected to continue into the night, with floodlights guiding the way.

Later in the day, friends told Johnson that the search focused on a 26-year-old case in which a woman was killed.

Just when I think that I have seen the most depraved things a human can do to another human, somebody posts a new story...........

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?

I know that this post is old but I have been searching for years for an old school mate who turned up missing and I just found this post which was made me have hope on finding out what happened to her. I spoke with Det Tillman and though he cold not give me specifics he did say that the last name on this case was Davis. My friends name was Cheryl Davis .And she lived in the same nieghborhood that they were searching. I will hold her family up in my prayers that they find out what happened to their loving daughter and sister. Gone but not forgotten. God Bless.

There are some missing S.C. on this website, but I do not see a Cheryl Davis. I wonder if it could be Krintina J. Porco missing from Hilton Head in
    1986.

You won't find her name probably because it is has been 26 years and the cops gave up, They probably thought she ran away. I guess she wasn't important enough. Her family had reward posters of her for several years then they disappeared. Like I said, the Detective said the last name on that case was Davis. I am waiting for a call on lead detective because I have information that may be useful. I have tried over the past 7-8 years to find anything on her and I contacted the police. But I guess I called the "wrong police" if there is such a thing. You would think that all missing cases would be across the board, at least cases that have been unsolved over a period of time that would constitute a possible homicide. when I hit the keyword jackpot and read the story here, I just knew it had to be her. I ask everyone who reads this to pray for justice for Cheryl Davis and all others who have lost their family member. But I can assure you this, even if it does not happen here on earth, There will be judgement on those who are responsible for their dark evil secrets of sins they have committed against our missing loved ones. Even though that is not how we would like to see justice prevail, hopefully we can find if even a smidgen of comfort in knowing this. And now let us pray....God give us comfort in our pain of not knowing what has been done to our loved ones and your precious children, give our police the knowledge and patience to do their job which you have called them to do and give them wisdom to know where to go and what to do when life is in danger or when life has been taken , to discern right from wrong and good versus evil. Lead them with your guiding light towards the truth. And take care of those who have left us so when we meet in your house, there will be joy. AMEN!Gone but not forgotten.

acmorwin, Do you have any more information on Cheryl? I would love to help try to find her. How old was she when she disappeared?
Is that all the information the LE will give you? And did they find anything on the search they were doing in 2005? TIA

kwatson696, The last time that I saw her was at a 7-11 (now closed)store located on Wappoo rd when I was pregnant with my first son I was 18, she is was about the same age as me. So she was 18 or 19 years of age when she disappeared. When I spoke to the detective and asked if that was cheryl, he did not say untill I told him a few things that I knew about her as well as important info that my husband had told me prior to his death. It was after that that he said that the last name on the case was Davis. He did not tell me whether or not they found her in the area that where they were searching, he did not tell me much of anything because he claimed he was not the lead detective in that case. I know that he knows whether or not they found anything because he was there. I would hope that if they did find something he would have the decency to tell me. Whether or not they have made arrests, any information on ANY case where there has been a missing person or possible foul play should be not taken lightly. I am upset that whoever's case it is has not contacted me. I have tried over the years to give them information but they could not find her name or they just did not want to look. Looking at the City of Charleston website, they have a well funded and well educated staff with state of the art equipment, there is NO excuse for the way her case has been handled. Trust me, her case is not the only one who has not received the proper treatment. My husband was another case in point. I guess only high profile cases get the best treatment. I have tried to find anything on the outcome of that search but no luck. I even wrote to the person who did the story for our local newspaper. I do not know where her parents and family are so that's a bust. There are just too many Davis's in our area and I do not know her parents first name. I appreciate the offer to help, you are more then welcome. I just don't understand why I cannot find her name anywhere on all the missing persons websites that are available. And why didn't they mention her name on the news story? What is the big secret? I cannot see her parents or family wanting her name to not be disclosed to the public since when she had come up missing years ago, there were posters all over the place for years. It does not make since. Thanks for your interest, AC

Cheryl Davis was my half sister

I remember when my husband and my family moved to Alabama, and my father called me and told me that Cheryl was missing. He was so sure that someone had taken her or killed her. I told him that maybe she just ran away.

I found this website by pure accident. I hope that Cheryl just decided that she didn't want to be in West Ashley anymore and she just simply..............................ran away.

West Ashley is right across the bridge from my hometown and I have never heard of this person until now. I will ask my mom if she has heard of this case.
