In a sweeping new policy statement, the Justice Department said Thursday it will not stand in the way of states that want to legalize, tax and regulate marijuana as voters in Washington and Colorado did last fall, as long as there are effective controls to keep marijuana away from kids, the black market and federal property.

"It's nothing short of historic," said Dan Riffle of the Marijuana Policy Project, which backed Colorado's new law. "It's a very big deal for the DOJ to say that if the states want to legalize marijuana, that's fine. Everybody in this movement should be thrilled."

Marijuana should not even be classed as a drug.

It's not an opiate.

It's a weed. Who makes weeds illegal? Dandelion, you're arrested!

Here's a very timely report/discussion regarding legal medicinal marijuana farming in CA, and DOJ interference. For those unfamiliar, This American Life is an awesome podcast which is free. The link is for the entire episode,("I Was Just Trying to Help") the relevant part is "Act Two": Nipped in the Bud. I feel so bad and frustrated on the legal growers part. They must just be incredulous, yet hopeful, after these DOJ rulings.

Sometimes I think This American Life should be required listening. Imagine if we could get rid of all of the cynical, destructive talk radio and listen to something which actually attempts to illuminate a common thread!
