Gonzales' government vehicle was found several hours later in the city of Douglas by tracking the worker's cellphone, which was still inside.

"It appears to be an assault and robbery," Fidler said. "We're still investigating all leads."

The region is used by drug smugglers and people entering the United States illegally.

"We do have significant foot traffic and vehicle traffic that's attributed to illegal activity," Capas said.

The monument was the site of the still-unsolved 1980 disappearance of a Park Service ranger, Paul Fugate, who was last seen when he went on foot patrol.

Also in the region, the unsolved shooting death of a Douglas-area rancher, Rob Krentz, helped spur passage of a 2010 Arizona law targeting illegal immigration.

The trial for a man accused of attempted murder in connection with an attack on a National Park Service employee nearly two years ago has been pushed to April 2016 following a change of attorneys on both sides.

The trial for Gil Gaxiola... is now set to begin April 5, 2016...

Gaxiola previously rejected a plea offer that would sentence him to 28 years in prison. He also completed a restoration to competency program after receiving conflicting diagnoses from the state and the defense’s independent psychological evaluations.

A jury of five men and seven women took a day and a half to convict Gil Gaxiola of first-degree attempted murder of a National Park Service employee, as well as armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, kidnapping and theft of means of transportation, following an 11-day trial...

Gonzales' reaction following the verdict was one of relief...

“The bottom line is, if he had just asked me for the keys, I would have given them to him,” Gonzales concluded.

A plea deal — which would have sentenced to 28 years in prison — had been on the table as early as August 2014. After the Aug. 19, 2016 hearing, Gaxiola was given 30 days to accept the deal. It was rejected.
