United Airlines mistakenly offers free fares Thursday

Do you think they should honor the tickets?

United Airlines mistakenly offers free fares Thursday

Even low-cost carriers can't compete against this: United Airlines on Thursday was briefly giving away tickets for free or negligible fees.

United says it accidentally filed fares for zero dollars, although airport charges could have resulted in a small cost. Passengers reported buying tickets for $5 to $10.

Nancy Ilk, a consultant who flies often from Blooming Prairie, Minn., said she got one of the tickets for $10 to fly from Minneapolis to Houston and Washington's Reagan National and back in October. The $10 was noted as a Sept. 11 security fee.

She's waiting to see whether United will honor the ticket. "It should be interesting," she said.

United weighs honoring free fares after ticketing mistake

    By Samantha BomkampTribune reporter

After accidentally offering free fares, United Airlines is reviewing whether to honor the tickets bought by some quick customers.

The Chicago-based airline did not say how many free tickets were issued. The mistake happened when a group of fares were being filed, not from any technological glitch. Lucky fliers got by with only paying a 9-11 security fee at $2.50 per flight leg, or $5 to $10 per ticket.

Bookings were halted on united.com and by phone after the mistake was caught, but service was restored by mid-afternoon.

United says it will honor free tickets in online mistake

After accidentally offering free fares on Thursday, United Airlines said it will honor tickets bought by some quick customers.

"We’ve reviewed the error that occurred yesterday and based on these specific circumstances, we will honor the tickets," United announced on Twitter on Friday afternoon.

Can you imagine if someone bought like 50 non-refundable plane tickets, and then United decides to charge the correct fare? LOL
