OH OH - Asenath 'Seenie' Dukat, 8, Upper Arlington, 3 June 1980

Asenath Louise Dukat was an 8 year old third grade student at Barrington Elementary School in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Asenath had brown hair and she was known by her nickname as Seenie. Like all school age children, the end of the school year was only one week away and Asenath was looking forward to summer vacation.





On the afternoon of Tuesday June 3,1980, the school dismissal bell rang at 3:00 p.m., but Asenath’s third grade class teacher kept the class 10 minutes after school to discipline them for talking during a class lesson earlier in the day.

Asenath left Barrington Elementary School at 3:10 p.m. and began the 12 block walk home from school. Asenath was last seen by her two classmates at 3:20 p.m. walking along her usual route on Waltham Road heading towards her Malvern Avenue home in Upper Arlington.

Asenath’s parents contacted Upper Arlington Police at 4:34 p.m. and reported that their daughter was missing. An extensive search of the neighborhood was immediately launched by Upper Arlington Police along with neighbors and friends of the Dukat family.

Three hours after Asenath was reported missing, her body was found in a drainage ditch near the corner of Riverside Drive and Waltham Road in Upper Arlington, less than one block from her home.

The investigation revealed that Asenath had been raped, strangled, and beaten by a blunt force trauma to the head. Investigators believed that Asenath had been abducted somewhere between the school and her house, and was murdered at a location other than where she was found.

No one has ever been arrested in connection with the abduction and murder of Asenath Louise Dukat and the case remains unsolved to this day.

I noticed that there are other threads on WebSleuths involving young female children that went missing or were found murdered in the Ohio Valley region during the 1980’s.

I don’t know if there are any connections here, but they both lived in Ohio, had brown hair, and were the same age.

The murder of Asenath Louise Dukat occurred on Tuesday June 3, 1980 in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Upper Arlington is a suburb of Columbus, Ohio.

On Friday June 13, 1980, Tiffany Jennifer Papesh, a 8 year old girl from Maple Heights, Ohio went missing. Maple Heights is a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio.

It is a straight shot and a two hours drive on Interstate 71 from Columbus to Cleveland.

From things I have read, certain perpetrators are always on the lookout for victims. But, you may be onto something... maybe this was a salesperson's territory, for example?

Because she got out of school ten minutes late, however, I wonder if she crossed paths with someone she normally would not have done. It's mentioned twice in a brief article which makes me wonder if the police emphasized that point. But, it may have just been to impress the time upon potential witnesses.

Girl, 8, Found Slain In Upper Arlington

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Wednesday June 4, 1980, police and school officials plan to beef up protection for school students at Barrington Elementary School and the neighborhood where an 8 year old girl was found slain.

Asenath Louise Dukat was found slain in a shallow stream on the wooded grounds of the First Community Village retirement community by Upper Arlington police officers three hours after she had been reported missing.

The wooded area where the girl was found slain was only a few blocks from her home. The article had a picture of the crime scene where the child’s body was found.

The water in the shallow stream was only a few inches deep when the victim was found lying on her back. The child’s face was bloody and there were marks on her neck. A 20 pound rock was also found next to the victim’s head, which was used to batter the victim’s face. Sexual assault had not been ruled out as the motive and police had no suspects in the case.

Members of the Columbus Police Crime Scene Search Unit assisted Upper Arlington Police in gathering evidence at the crime scene.

Upper Arlington Police said that there have been reports of men trying to lure children into vehicles on the southern side of the suburb during the past few weeks.

Upper Arlington Police also revealed that on May 7, a Tremont Elementary School girl was assaulted by a youth who had struck and choked her.

Arlington Police ‘Satisfied’ Witness Saw Killer Of Girl

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Thursday June 5, 1980, the newspaper reported that Upper Arlington police are satisfied that a woman they interviewed under hypnosis saw the killer of 8 year old Asenath Dukat.

The woman told police that she had been driving on Waltham Road on Tuesday afternoon when she saw a clean cut man in a white T-shirt carrying a large object in both hands. A red bicycle was parked nearby. Police believed that the large object may have been the victim.

Police also had another possible witness who gave police a description from which the police made a composite sketch of the suspect.

The newspaper article published a police composite sketch of the suspect and also a map showing the route where Asenath Louise Dukat walked home from school, where her school books were found, and where her body was found.

Upper Arlington Police said that Asenath Louise Dukat, a third grade student at Barrington Elementary School, apparently was abducted as she was walking alone Tuesday afternoon on Waltham Road to her way home after school. Police believed she was confronted by a man as she was walking somewhere on Waltham Road but couldn’t pinpoint an exact location.

Police said the child was raped in a grassy area on the First Community Village grounds, which is on the south side of Waltham Road, but is shielded from the road by trees. The girl’s school papers and umbrella were found by police several feet inside the village’s grounds, just south of the intersection of Waltham Road and Hillside Drive.

Police speculated that the child may have been carried to the stream after she was raped or she could have escaped temporarily from her assailant who pursued her and caught her at the stream. The girl’s body was found about one-eighth of a mile south of her home.

The Franklin County Coroner said that Asenath Louise Dukat was strangled and raped, but was killed by a blow to her head with a 20 pound rock.

Asenath was last seen between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. and the coroner estimated her time of death at 4:00 p.m. that afternoon.

Upper Arlington Police believed that both the Dukat rape-murder and the attack on an 11 year old Tremont Elementary School girl on May 7 were related.

The 11 year old girl was walking home after school when she was attacked and choked into unconsciousness off Canterbury Road near U.S. Route 33. Police believed her attacker was scared off, which enabled the 11 year old girl to survive her attack.

The suspect in the May 7 attack on the 11 year old girl was described as thin with an olive complexion and with dark brown or black hair. The suspect was believed to be a white male between 15 to 20 years old. Police also said that the suspect has a Mediterranean look, possibly Italian or Sicilian.

Police noted the following similarities in the attacks:

Both attacks happened almost two miles apart from each other and in forested areas within a half mile of U.S Route 33.

Both girls were going home after school when they were attacked and choked. A red bicycle was seen and bike tracks were found in the vicinity of both attacks.

Both attacks were sexually motivated. The May 7 attack on the 11 year old girl was unsuccessful but Asenath Louise Dukat was raped.

Police speculated that the use of a bicycle by the assailant indicated a strong possibility that the suspect may be unable to obtain a driver’s license on account of his mental disability or age.

Police also speculated another attack that occurred in April of a female Ohio State University employee who was assaulted as she was riding her bicycle along a secluded path by Kinnear Road. The April attack occurred a few miles from where Asenath Louise Dukat was murdered.

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Thursday June 5, 1980, a traffic jam formed at Barrington Elementary School as frightened parents in cars and on bicycles picked up their children after school.

The principal at Barrington Elementary School said that he has instructed all of the children at the school to go directly home or wherever they were supposed to go after school.

Stunned and frightened parents in Upper Arlington are trying to explain to their elementary school children about the murder of Asenath Louise Dukat.

The day after Asenath’s murder, the children in her school classroom were questioned about who saw Asenath after school and when. As a result of the discussion, two children were sent to the principal’s office to be questioned by Upper Arlington Police.

Arlington Police To Use Laser In Search For Killer’s Prints

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Friday June 6, 1980, Upper Arlington Police announced that a local private firm will examine rocks similar to the murder weapon in an attempt to use a sophisticated laser beam technique to see if it can detect fingerprint impressions on surfaces. If the test is successful, the fatal rock used in the murder will be sent to the FBI for testing.

Police were also thinking about sending the girl’s school papers, umbrella, and rubber ball that were found in the grassy area to the FBI labs in a hunt for clues.

Police announced that after interviewing the woman who saw the killer carrying the child into the retirement village grounds and with witnesses who saw a suspect in the May 7 attack on another school girl, have developed the following description of the killer.

The killer was described as 5 foot 9 to 6 feet tall, weights 180 to 200 pounds, has black hair with olive complexion. On May 7, he wore old blue jeans and light brown or suede shoes with dark shoelaces, brown gloves with black rigtags, and a light brown zippered jacket with black or brown elastic around the neck and wrists.

The red 10 speed bicycle the killer rode had no fenders and three reflectors, an orange one on the front wheel, a red one on the rear wheel, and another hanging from the back seat.

Police said that scores of people from their teens to their 40’s have been questioned by the police about the murder, but they were not even near making an arrest. Police also planned to question many more people in the coming days.

Many of the tips called in to police were sightings of persons who matched the description of the swarthy suspect. Police also received many license numbers of automobiles whose operators attracted attention.

Police also outlined some of the operations in their hunt for the murder suspect, such as filling out a field information card after responding to a call of a person acting suspiciously around young people.

If police later found they need to bring in the person for additional questioning, they will either contact that person from the field card information or bring them in for questioning.

They had an excellent description of the guy, so something is wrong here.

Maybe he used a car to get part way then used the bike the rest of the way. Or parked the bike, abucted the girl via car and used the bike to get out of the area while the cops were all over the place. Then came back for his car later. There has to be something that just looking for a guy on a bike matching that description is making them overlook.

Maybe he was a kid and was able to go blend in with other kids. But, it sounds like they were looking at the potential that the killer was young. Maybe they didn't look young enough? I know of one hideously brutal rape/murder of a grown woman (early 20s) attacked in her apartment by a 15-year-old. So, there are kids capable of heinous crimes younger than most people like to think about... I'm not saying it was a kid. It could have been an adult even more easily.

In the composite sketch that police released of the killer, the hair style was a common hair style for teens and young adult men back in the early 1980's.

One person who resembled the composite sketch came to the attention of investigators in June 1980.

This person was eventually cleared by police as a suspect. He committed suicide in June 1984, days after the fourth anniversary of the Asenath Dukat murder.

Man Nabbed Near Cleveland To Be Questioned In Killing

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Monday June 9, 1980, a 20 year old Upper Arlington man arrested over the weekend near Cleveland, Ohio will be questioned in the rape-murder of 8 year old Asenath Dukat.

Upper Arlington police refused to identify the suspect or say where he was arrested in the Cleveland area. They did say that the man was unemployed and had been previously arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. They cautioned that the man was not considered to be a prime suspect.

The man was stopped on Saturday June 7 by police in Northeast Ohio for a traffic violation. When officers approached the man, he closed his car window and started to jab himself in the groin with a hypodermic needle. Police broke the car window to subdue him. At the police station, the man got into another fight with police officers. The man was arrested and jailed on a variety of assault charges.

Upper Arlington police learned of the arrest by an anonymous tipster, who had called investigators about the man earlier in the week.

The anonymous tipster told investigators he had been at a bar on the night of the murder when a man began crying and said he was afraid to go back to his apartment.

Upper Arlington police said that they were still busy questioning suspects. 21 persons were in various stages of being talked to and another 80 suspects have yet to be interrogated.

Columbus, Grandview Heights, Reynoldsburg, Worthington, and Westerville police have provided information on suspects to Upper Arlington police.

Arlington Police Will Re-Question Man

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Friday June 13, 1980, a former Upper Arlington man held by police in Willoughby, Ohio after a bizarre incident during a traffic stop on June 7, will be re-questioned soon by Upper Arlington police in the June 3 rape-murder of Asenath Dukat.

The suspect lived in an apartment off Northwest Blvd. in Clinton Township. Upper Arlington police learned of the suspect when an anonymous caller told them the suspect was in an Ohio State University area tavern weeping and telling other patrons he couldn’t go home.

Police sought the suspect for questioning following the anonymous phone call, but found his apartment abandoned. They subsequently located him in police custody in the Cleveland suburb.

Upper Arlington police were interested in the suspect being held in Willoughby on account that he was known to ride a red 10 speed bicycle, he resembled a composite drawing made by police artists, and his apartment and his parent’s home weren’t far from the murder site.

Skull, Brain Injury Killed Dukat Girl Autopsy Shows

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Tuesday June 10,, 1980, a preliminary autopsy reported that 8 year old Asenath Dukat died of skull fractures and brain contusions inflicted when she was struck on the head with a 20 pound shale type rock. The autopsy also showed that the third grader had also been raped.

Hand prints were left on both sides of her throat as her attacker choked her. Bruises were found beneath both eyes and on the left side of the nose.

Upper Arlington police were to distribute pamphlets describing the murder suspect to motorists on Waltham Road near where the body was found. They hoped to find another witness in addition to the woman who is thought to have seen the killer carrying the youngster onto the retirement complex grounds.

Police also believed that Dukat’s killer was the same person involved in the attack of another school girl on May 7. Police described the man as white, between 16 to 20 years old with a Mediterranean look. The killer was riding a red Schwinn 10 speed bicycle.

I want to mention that Upper Arlington is an affluent suburban city on the northwest side of Columbus.

Police Still Believe 8-Year-Old’s Killer Is A Local

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Sunday June 29, 1980, the Upper Arlington police chief believed that the murderer of Asenath Dukat was a local person or someone who knows the area that may still be stalking the suburb.

The police chief was concerned that the upcoming Fourth of July celebration in the suburb could be a strong attraction for Asenath’s killer looking for a new victim.

The police chief said that on the previous Sunday, he personally spent time with the Dukat Family walking over the murder scene, and going over names and mug shots.

Upper Arlington police have also questioned all the employees and residents of First Community Village, where Asenath Dukat’s body was found in a wooded area on the grounds of the retirement community.

Arlington Man Faces Questions In Dukat Slaying

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Wednesday October 1, 1980, Upper Arlington police were looking at another suspect who was arrested on Saturday September 27 in Columbus after an abduction attempt near an apartment complex on the northwest side of Columbus.

In the abduction attempt on September 27, three women saw a male suspect drag a 13 year old girl away from her bicycle and attempted to force the girl into a wooded area. The suspect fled from the scene in his automobile after the three women ran screaming to the girl’s aid. The three women were able to get the automobile license plate number which led to the suspect’s arrest.

Upper Arlington police said that the suspect arrested in the September 27 abduction attempt was identified in a police lineup by the victim from the May 7 attack in Upper Arlington as the person who was riding a red bicycle on Canterbury Lane prior to her attack.

The suspect in the September 27 abduction attempted also owned a red ten speed Concord bicycle which was impounded by Upper Arlington police.

The article noted that the suspect’s residence is slightly more than a mile from the scenes of the May abduction and the June murder, and three one half miles from Saturday’s abduction attempt.

The article also noted that Upper Arlington police were aware of the suspect when an Upper Arlington woman made a complaint to police in May that the suspect was following her. Police investigated the woman’s complaint but didn’t lodge any charges against the suspect.

Bike Theory Dropped In Murder Probe

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Tuesday November 25, 1980, detectives discarded the theory that a man who rode a red 10 speed bicycle murdered 8 year old Asenath Dukat.

Police now believe that Asenath Dukat was abducted by a motorist as she walked from the school to her home on the afternoon of June 3, 1980.

The Upper Arlington police chief said that the FBI had conducted lab tests on evidence from the Dukat murder scene against articles taken from the suspect arrested in the September 27 abduction.

Comparisons between the suspect’s tennis shoes, plaster cast of a footprint found at the Dukat murder scene, and blood samples were inconclusive.

It was revealed that during the investigation, detectives learned that about 20 children, mostly females, were followed by male motorists near Barrington Elementary School between September 1979 and June 1980.

Asenath Dukat had told her mother that on two separate occasions, she had been followed by a man in an automobile.

It was also revealed that on June 3, parents who were picking up their children and voters going to the primary election polls at Barrington Elementary School reported seeing Asenath Dukat at Waltham Road and Arlington Avenue, but Asenath wasn’t seen walking past Arlington Avenue.

It must be pointed out that this person was never arrested or charged in the June 3,1980 murder of Asenath Louise Dukat or in the May 7, 1980 attack on the other Upper Arlington school girl.

However, he was convicted of abducting a 13 year old girl from the September 27, 1980 incident in Columbus. He served several years in prison for that crime.

He tried to get the record for his abduction conviction from 1980 expunged in 2002, but the court denied his motion for expungement.


The Columbus Dispatch Friday January 16, 1981

Man Found Guilty Of Abducting Girl

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Friday January 16, 1980, jurors deliberated less than two hours before finding a 20 year old Upper Arlington man guilty of abducting a 13 year old girl near an apartment complex on the northwest side of Columbus on September 27, 1980.

During the four day trial, witnesses testified that they saw the 20 year old man pulling the girl from a bicycle and dragging her toward a secluded field. The man fled from the scene when passersby stopped and screamed for help.

The judge immediately sentenced the 20 year old Upper Arlington man to a prison term of three to ten years and a fine of one thousand dollars.

The convicted man’s defense attorneys asserted their client had cooperated in the Asenath Dukat murder case and has been cleared as a suspect.

Upper Arlington police still wanted to question the convicted man about the murder of Asenath Dukat, but his defense attorneys said that they wouldn’t allow them to continue to badger their client.

More than one red bicycle riding young man was seen around young girls.. one actually DRAGGING a girl off into the woods. I mean, it's crazy. I don't think it can be only one person. Because, if it was, all of the details would mesh into one person and he'd be in prison right now.

What in the world is up with that one guy stabbing himself in the groin with a hypodermic needle? Are there two different guys who were crying in public saying they were afraid to go home?

Maybe the terrible murder of Seenie is just one of the horrifiic things going on in this time and place.... an affluent Ohio suburb in 1980.

I guess I officially retire my theory of a traveling salesman. Sounds like there were enough roving child molestors/child abductors/child murderers already present.

So, what happened in the 60s and 70s that perhaps created all of these people? Did something awful happen to numerous boys around that time? (I don't subscribe to the idea that every child who has something bad happen to them goes on to do bad things, so this is only a starting point so maybe we can make some connections.)

About the guy who stabbed himself in the groin with a hypodermic needle, it is my understanding that he had a mental illness and had been previously hospitalized for mental problems. He had suffered from occasional hallucinations and paranoia.

I can't say for sure, but when he had that bizarre incident with police in Northeastern Ohio, he may have been on his way to upstate New York. It is my understanding that Asenath Louise Dukat was buried at a cemetery in a small town outside of Syracuse, New York.

In June 1984, he committed suicide a few days after the 4th anniversary of the Asenath Louise Dukat murder. He jumped to his death from the sixth floor room he had been staying at the YMCA in Downtown Columbus. The door to his sixth floor room was locked and the window was open. No signs of foul play were found and it appeared that he jumped out of the window on his own accord.

It is my understanding that he had been tentatively cleared as a suspect on account that physical evidence collected from him didn't match the physical evidence from the Dukat murder crime scene.

Now about the guy who abducted and dragged a 13 year old girl into the woods. I honestly don't know what is up with him. All summer long, it was all over the Columbus news media that police were looking for a suspect that had been abducting and attacking girls on the northwest side.

My guess is that he thought the police would be tied up at the home football game that was going on at Ohio State University at the same time he tried to abduct the 13 year old girl.

Luckily for the girl, three women happened to be driving by in the apartment complex when they saw him abducting the girl and they all ran to her aid screaming at the suspect.

It is my understanding that this guy had a job at a cafeteria at Kingsdale Shopping Center in Upper Arlington. So maybe he might have seen girls where he worked at in the shopping center.

Even though physical evidence collected from him and the Dukat murder crime scene were inconclusive, I honestly don't know if Upper Arlington police still consider him to be a suspect in the Dukat case or in the May 7, 1990 attack on the other Upper Arlington school girl.

I should also point out that he is not listed online on the Ohio sex offender registry database.

This is due to the fact that his offense was committed in 1980, and the sex offender registry database law didn't take effect until 1996.

So anyone convicted of a sex offense in Ohio before 1996 aren't required by Ohio law to register as a sex offender.

DNA Test May Bring Arrest In ’80 Death

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Tuesday May 22, 1990, Upper Arlington police said that they had a prime suspect and were waiting on DNA test results before any filing any charges in connection with the June 3, 1980 rape-murder of Asenath Louise Dukat.

Police refused to identify the prime suspect and said that the prime suspect was seen in the area on the day of the murder where Asenath Dukat’s body was found.

Police sent evidence they had from the Dukat murder site for DNA testing in hopes of getting the killer’s genetic fingerprint. The article explained that cells from such evidence as blood, semen, hair, or fingernails are submitted to a radioactive process that creates a picture of cell patterns similar to the bar code of grocery store items.

Police also refused to say what evidence was tested, but did say that evidence collected from the murder scene would be compared with evidence collected from a suspect.

A laser test that was conducted in 1980 from the shale rock that was used in the murder of Asenath Louise Dukat failed to lift any fingerprints from the rock.

Police said that the man they’re currently looking at recently became a prime suspect on account that he fits a new FBI profile of the killer in the Dukat case.

The new FBI profile of the killer stated that:

* The suspect was a loner in his early 20’s with few friends.

* Was from a family with a strict abusive father and a protective mother. Had one or more sisters who were successful and received more recognition from their parents.

* Failed in school or work because he was not accepted by fellow students and employees.

* May have sought treatment for depression.

* Has attacked others but not necessarily killed them.

* Is physically strong and tends to choke or hits his victims.

Fresh Approach, Grit Turned Up Murder Suspect

In a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article published on Sunday June 3, 1990, two Upper Arlington police officers who spent ten years working on the murder case believed that they have their best lead on the 10th anniversary of the Asenath Louise Dukat murder case.

The two police officers said that they came up with a fresh idea and a lucky break at the same time, but refused to say who their suspect was or what evidence was sent to the FBI for DNA testing.

The two officers did say that their suspect’s name was in an index file of 5,000 names that were collected during the Dukat murder investigation.

Five hundred were considered suspects in the case, and their new suspect was gleaned from the other 4,500 suspects in the case.

An unidentified source told the Columbus Dispatch that the new suspect was a former resident of Upper Arlington who moved from Ohio after the murder and was either incarcerated or under investigation for crimes outside of Ohio.

Asenath’s body was found at 7:28 p.m. on June 3, 1980 near a culvert in the First Community Village grounds. She had been raped and then struck in the head with a 20 pound rock found near the scene. Unidentified human hair was also found at the murder scene.

Asenath Louise Dukat left Barrington Elementary School at 3:10 p.m. for the 1 mile walk to her home after school. At 3:20 p.m., two classmates saw Asenath Louise Dukat on her usual route on Waltham Road. They were the last known people to see Asenath alive. Nobody but the killer witnessed her murder.

Witnesses have told police that they saw a man riding a red bicycle about the time of the killing. Police believed that Asenath Louise Dukat was abducted along Waltham Road, raped in a grassy area on the First Community village grounds, and then moved about 300 feet to the culvert where she was later found murdered.

Police still believed that the red bicycle will tie in to the new suspect.
