Skull Found in Loggy Meadows
LOCATION: Loggy Meadows DATE: 09-13-2013 TIME: 1030
CASE NUMBER: VICTIM: CITY:

On 09/13/13 at approximately 10:30 in the morning near the Loggy Meadows area of the Golden Trout Wilderness, a cattle rancher discovered a skull while checking on his cattle. He alerted the authorities on 09/14/13 when he was able to access a telephone. A deputy, as well as a detective from Violent Crimes, responded to the location. They located the skull where the rancher had reported it was, and the surrounding area was searched. There was no physical evidence of a crime, and there was no identification material. No other human remains were located, and the skull was turned over to the Tulare County Coroner’s Office for further investigation.

The Coroner’s Office asked Forensic Anthropologists from Fresno State University for their assistance, something that is typical of these types of investigations. They determined that the skull is that of a male in his early to mid-20’s and had been exposed to the elements for a time period of up to ten years. There were no signs of obvious trauma, and the skull is being processed for DNA by the State of California’s Department of Justice DNA Laboratory.

The Violent Crimes Unit is assisting by cross referencing missing person’s reports.

By matching DNA, Wright said they identified the remains being that of Omar Rodriguez Alcantar, who disappeared in 2008 while on a camping trip with a church group. Wright said the man was a Mexican national from Long Beach. He was 26 years old at the time of his death.

The DNA match settles the identify of the skull found in July by a rancher while on horseback in the Loggy Meadows area of the Golden Trout Wilderness, just north of Ponderosa.

Wright said the DNA did not match a young man from Porterville who had gone missing in the same area on July 13, 1992.
