" Composite sketches of the suspect, which were done with the help of the victims at the time of the crimes, have also been released by police.

Ansari says while years have gone by since the crimes, police are not giving up on solving them.

He's calling the reward money "the icing on the cake."

The Toronto incident happened on June 10, 1992, when police say a 21-year-old woman was walking home at about 11:30 p.m.

It's alleged a man followed her into her apartment building and then into an elevator where he brandished a handgun, forced her into a stairwell and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint before fleeing.

Seven years earlier, on May 3, 1985, police say a 34-year-old woman was in a Vancouver parking garage when it's alleged a man approached her and then sexually assaulted her in a stairwell.

While both cases were unsolved, Ansari says new forensic DNA technology introduced in 2001 has allowed police to check cold cases and in April 2005, evidence collected from the Toronto case was linked to the cold case from Vancouver"

“It takes one person, the right person, to see the press conference and call in a tip that will lead to the resolution of this case,” Det. Ali Ansari of the sex crimes unit said Friday. “Fifty-thousand dollars is the icing on the cake. I’m hoping that‘ll loosen up some lips. We know loyalties fray over time. Friends become enemies and so on.”

<<snip>>

"Police believe there could be other victims.

“The message to the perpetrator is that we are coming for you. You better be looking over your shoulder,” Ansari said.

Anyone with information about the cases is asked to contact Ansari directly at (416) 808-7448 or through Crime Stoppers."

It's good to see that they are working on these cold cases. It will be interesting to see if the $50,000 reward leads to an arrest.

Det. Ansari got good results with another two cold cases from Toronto that happened in the early 90s. I can't find the news reports, though.

Let's hope he's twice lucky. (fingers crossed). Good for the Toronto victim for speaking to reporters. Very brave woman.

The sketch is really vague. It is hard even to discern an ethnicity or much else from this. It is too bad they didn't include anything else, such as clothing, voice description, or any other identifiers.

They might want to be checking out all assaults during and after that time period.

Maybe the case you are referring to is this one...

"A 43-year old man has been arrested in Fort McMurray for sexual assaults committed in Toronto in the early 90s.

Wood Buffalo RCMP say Steven McGuire was arrested here and appeared in Toronto court on Sunday.

He’s accused of two sexual assaults with a weapon, which happened in 1993 and 94, as well as robbery, threats, and break and enter."

Yes, think it was Det. Ansari and LE believe there may be more victims..

From 2009.Also references several attacks, but this one is very close to the coldcase one.

"....... a 26-year-old woman was walking home from a bar along Yonge Street at 1:15 a. m. on Saturday when she was abducted and sexually assaulted near Glebe Road in Davisville.

Ms. Holmes lives a block from that intersection. She also tends to walk late at night. The 27-year-old dancer had not heard about the incident until her friends contacted her.

"It's quite concerning," Constable Tony Vella said. "It was a stranger-to-stranger [attack], according to the victim."

Two men grabbed the victim from behind and dragged her into a dark-coloured, four-door vehicle, police said. Her abductors drove her to a location where she was sexually assaulted and then released, police said. She took herself to the hospital"

<<snip>>

"Police are looking for two suspects, both white. One is described as clean-shaven, with short, dark hair and a skinny build. He stood at about 5-foot-8. The second suspect had a tanned complexion, a medium build and black curly hair and bushy eyebrows"

A difference in approach to the Vancouver/Toronto assaults may explain why description of perp is vague.

"VPD spokesman Const. Brian Montague said the composite might trigger someone’s memory of an individual who lived in Vancouver in the 1980s.

Vancouver investigators spoke with the 1985 victim Friday morning and she was shown the composite, he said.

Montague said he didn’t know if she considered the composite a good likeness of the suspect.

“Whether or not she recognized him or not, I’m not sure that’s relevant to our investigation,” said Montague.

He said the important fact is the suspect is the same individual, according to DNA.

“Even if she did recognize him, we wouldn’t be able to release that information to the public,” he said. “We need to protect the integrity of our investigation.”

Vancouver police didn’t issue a press release in 2005 when Toronto police made the DNA connection between the two cases, Montague said

"While it is the same person who has committed them, the investigations are separate.”

He adds there are definite challenges to solving a case like this.

“If we can link that DNA then it will be easy for us to confirm the identity [of the suspect], but unfortunately we don’t have that sample right now. The suspect may be living anywhere in Canada. He may be living outside the country. He may even be deceased for all we know.”

Toronto Police have released a composite sketch and are offering a $50,000 reward.

Investigators from both forces are asking anyone with more information to give them a call. “The key is for someone who not only do they know someone who may resemble the photo but that lived in the Vancouver area in the 1980s and in the Toronto-area in the 1990s,” explains Montague."

A third possibility, of course, is that this guy was a drifter who visited both cities but had no longstanding ties to either.

This may explain why he seemingly only attacked once in each city.

Somehow missed this bit concerning varied suspect description, includes video.

"In 1985, the suspect was described as white male, 25 to 30 years old, 5’ 7” to 5’ 9” in height, with blond, collar-length hair.

In 1992, he was described as a white male 25 to 35 years old, 5’ 4” tall, medium build, 150 to 160 pounds, small round face, with brown or hazel eyes and collar-length, light brown hair.

“The Toronto occurrence is 11:30 p.m. and the Vancouver incident is in the middle of the afternoon, that could account for the discrepancy [of his hair] or he dyed his hair,” Det. Ansari explained"

These don't sound that different to me, light brown/dirty blond maybe? On the shorter side for a man. Maybe was 25-28 in 1985 and about 32-35 in 1992?

I wonder if they have submitted the DNA into databases. I'd hope they are looking in the US and have submitted the DNA to CODIS also since those are basically border towns.

Bumping this case and wondering if there have been any new leads in the case...
Has the perp's dna been compared to any other crimes?
Would it be a stretch to wonder if he was around the Yorkville area in 1984? ie Gilmour/ Tice..
