WASHINGTON (AP) — The No. 2 officer at the military command in charge of all U.S. nuclear war-fighting forces is suspected in a case involving counterfeit gambling chips at a western Iowa casino and has been suspended from his duties, officials said.

Navy Vice Adm. Tim Giardina has not been arrested or charged, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation special agent David Dales said Saturday. The state investigation is ongoing.

Giardina, deputy commander at U.S. Strategic Command, was suspended on Sept. 3 and is under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, a Strategic Command spokeswoman said........more......

So rigging a game at a casino is worth risking your military career....OK

People are serious about their gambling. Anyone Catholic who has ever been to bingo night at their parish knows this. :D

I saw this and was surprised! I wonder if he was given chips by someone or if this is all his own doing. Since it is the military, we will probably never know.

Investigators had no information about the number of counterfeit chips so they assumed that it was a one-time thing. The situations repeated themselves over the following months and the truth saw the light of day when Giardina stopped attending therapy classes for gambling addicts. The consequences of this act were very painful, because he has been suspended by the General of the American Air Force.

Not a one off.

3-star admiral fired as No. 2 nuclear commander

WASHINGTON (AP) — The deputy commander of U.S. nuclear forces, Vice Adm. Tim Giardina, was notified Wednesday that he has been relieved of duty amid a military investigation of allegations that he used counterfeit chips at an Iowa casino, the Navy said.

The move is exceedingly rare and perhaps unprecedented in the history of U.S. Strategic Command, which is responsible for all American nuclear warfighting forces, including nuclear-armed submarines, bombers and land-based missiles.

The Navy's top spokesman, Rear Adm. John Kirby, said Giardina, who had held the job since December 2011, is being reassigned to the Navy staff pending the outcome of the probe by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. The gambling matter originated as a local law enforcement investigation in Iowa in June.......more.......

Demoted to a 2-star...not a surprise after ohiogirl's findings above..

General in charge of nuclear missiles is fired

http://www.centurylink.net/news/rea...p-apnewsbreak_gen_in_charge_of_icbms_to_be-ap

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Air Force fired the general in charge of its nuclear missiles on Friday, just two days after a Navy admiral with top nuclear weapons responsibilities was sacked. Both men are caught up in investigations of alleged personal misconduct, adding to a cascade of turmoil inside the nation's nuclear weapons force.

The Air Force removed Maj. Gen. Michael Carey, a 35-year veteran, from his command of 20th Air Force, responsible for all 450 of the service's intercontinental ballistic missiles. Carey, who took his post in Wyoming in June 2012, will be reassigned pending the outcome of an investigation into personal misbehavior, the service said.

More in 4p. article....

From the article:

The Air Force would not specify what Carey is alleged to have done wrong, but two officials with knowledge of the investigation indicated that it was linked to alcohol use.

They said it was not related to the performance or combat readiness of ICBM units or to his stewardship of the force.

Report: U.S. nuclear general drank too much, misbehaved in Russia

http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/20/us/michael-carey-investigative-report/index.html?hpt=us_c2

(CNN) -- A U.S. general who oversaw nuclear weapons boozed, fraternized with "hot women" and disrespected his hosts during an official visit to Russia this year, an investigative report shows.

Maj. Gen. Michael Carey led the 20th Air Force responsible for three nuclear wings.

He was relieved of duty in October because of loss of confidence in his leadership, the Air Force said at the time without providing specific details.

But an Air Force Inspector General report released Thursday sheds more light into the case.......more.......

Yep:

His conduct was unbecoming of an officer, the report said.

The inspector general's office began its investigation after multiple "reports of misbehavior" while Carey was traveling on business. He was reassigned a few weeks ago pending the outcome of the investigation.

Experts say someone in his position should not put himself in a situation where he can unintentionally give up sensitive information. There was no indication Carey's behavior compromised sensitive nuclear information or went beyond drinking, dancing and fraternizing with the women, officials said.......

"This was an unfortunate incident. Maj. Gen. Carey has otherwise served the nation extremely well," said Gen William Shelton, who heads the Air Force Space Command. "After full consideration of all the available information, I determined the evidence supported taking further command action in addition to his previous removal from command of 20th Air Force."

He was transferred to the Air Force space operation......
