The loneliest planet: Riddle of world found floating through space without a star

• Floating planet PSO J318.5-22found by Hawaii's Institute of Astronomy
• The planet is 80 light years from Earth and formed 12 million years ago
• It is similar to other gas-giant planets found orbiting about young stars
• Yet, PSO J815.5-22 does not have a host star and is 'drifting on its own'

the story, with pictures, map, sidebars, at Daily Mail

The Gen-X of planets. Slacker!

(Ok that's what they used to say about us Xers anyway).

Also sounds a lot like my teenage son. Whom I always tell he was born 20 years too late.

Neat story!

Let's don't invite it dinner.

It'll ask if it can "just crash for a night" on your couch, then still be there three weeks later.

Poor little planet...

Maybe he is not a slacker, really...

Just has his "head in the clouds"?

My in laws tell me they used to say this about my husband. Husband confessed he was just lazy, and enjoyed the free ride on his parents' dime, and they were just trying to make themselves feel better. :D

Still, he's doing okay these days. So maybe there is hope for my son. And this planet. Someday he'll maybe join a star, become just another rock in a solar rat race, man.

Meantime he'll just be chilling, eating all our snacks and not paying rent.

Well, at least the poor thing has a soundtrack.

I hope he doesn't hang with the wrong "element"....

and doesn't run in dangerous circles and "rotations"... :sigh:

If he does... His problems could be of "astronomical" proportions! :what:

Reminds me of an exchange from the classic road movie "Two-lane Blacktop" starring James Taylor (yes, the singer) and Warren Oates:

Q: So where are you from?
A: Just passing through.
