Three people face felony charges for stealing from accused mobster Enrico Ponzo. Ponzo is the man that lived in Marsing for about 10 years under the assumed name Jay Shaw.

Ponzo faces charges for attempting to kill Frank Salemme, also known as "Cadillac Frank," a New England mob boss.

Emery says sometime in February or March the three men used a jackhammer and a blow torch to break a concrete floor in Ponzo's basement.

They found a safe

One could easily describe the valuables as a hidden treasure with an estimated the value over $100,000, but that’s only what authorities were able to recover.

:gasp:You talkin to me? How seriously crazy are the people that did that? As if they are not going to caught. By other mobsters I mean. They better pray the cops find them first.

On an aside it boggles my mind that mob folks still bury stuff in their floors and yards.

This case intrigues me because I live in Idaho. Unbelievable that this man could live under the radar so long.

For more than a decade, Jeffrey John Shaw was seen as an eccentric man amongst his neighbors in the cattle community of Marsing, Idaho -- a rancher with a thick Boston accent trying to blend in by wearing bib overalls and a straw hat.

During his time as an Idaho rancher, the raven-haired, goateed man raised cows and two kids and became trusted enough to run the town's irrigation system, according to court records.

But in February 2011, as he was set to purchase hay for his 12-acre ranch, police swooped in and exposed the rancher as a wanted mobster on the lam for 17 years.

In a Boston federal courtroom today, the goatee was gone. So were the overalls. And a jury was picked for the trial for Shaw under his real name: Enrico Ponzo. ........

What an interesting case! Thanks for bringing this here Reader!

As the trial is in session, I'm going to transfer it to the Trials Forum. But first I want to look up some older articles and see what this guy is all about. One of the articles I read said something about 'hit.'

Accused Mobster Enrico Ponzo Caught in Idaho

February 10, 2011

He introduced himself to his neighbors as Jeffrey Shaw, a man who went by the nickname "Jay." He paid for everything in cash. He bought his house in his girlfriend's name.

But his past proved a stubborn companion.

Ponzo couldn't hide his vaguely New York accent. He couldn't keep his stories straight. He couldn't hide his expertise with a gun during a trip to the local shooting range. And in a community where Ponzo was surrounded by wide open ranch land, his neighbors could tell he didn't know anything about farming.

The past Ponzo tried to bury finally came calling this week, when federal agents arrived at a subdivision in Marsing and shattered the life he had so carefully crafted.

Mobster As Time Capsule: Ponzo Returns To Mass.

March 25, 2011

He was arrested last month in a small town in southwestern Idaho, where he was living a quiet life on the lam among kids and cows. And now, with a graying goatee, a bald spot and a hearing aid, Ponzo is back home on the range in Massachusetts. Known out in cattle country as Jeffrey “Jay” Shaw, he — with U.S. Marshalls at his side — flew in from Marsing, Idaho. But his story shouldn’t be confused with “Lonesome Dove.”

Standing in an august, largely empty courtroom at 42, Ponzo comes back as a time capsule from a violent era in Boston when Mafia factions were killing each other and the FBI that was out to get them was infiltrated and corrupted by the Mafia’s rivals, Whitey Bulger’s Mob.

“At least from the intelligence we knew [Ponzo was] a very dangerous individual,” says retired State Police Sgt. Bill McGreal. McGreal tracked drug dealers and gangsters as a member of the Suffolk County Narcotics unit in the 1980s. Out of the North End, Ponzo was on the scene at 20, with a reputation for being brutal, hot-headed and wild.

“The group was known to us as ‘We Deliver’ ” McGreal says. “There were two people in each vehicle and they would deliver packets of cocaine.”

State police reports identified the young Ponzo as a potential shooter for the local Mafia. One tip off? The cops found a silencer and a rather big gun in his Revere apartment.

“It was a machine gun, a fully automatic machine gun, according to the Revere Police report,” McGreal says.

Accused Mafioso on the run for 17 years set to go on trial

Oct. 07, 2013

But years earlier in Boston, according to authorities, he was Ponzo, an alleged wannabe gangster, an associate of the New England Mafia who attempted to kill rivals including former Mafia leader Francis P. “Cadillac Frank” Salemme.

The true story of Ponzo, now 45, who spent 17 years on the lam, much of that time hiding out as a rancher in Marsing, Idaho, is set to play out in a trial beginning Monday in US District Court in Boston. Attorney bristles at demand Enrico Ponzo shave

Feds want wise guy’s whiskers whacked

Reputed mobster Enrico Ponzo will present two faces to a federal jury beginning next week — clean-shaven then full-bearded — *if prosecutors have their way.
The feds first want witnesses to recognize the accused hit man from his “prominent cleft chin,” then with a beard, mirroring his appearance while on the lam in Idaho.

Woman testifies at trial of Mafia associate in 1989 shooting

Kathleen Patterson was just a tourist, heading to a breakfast restaurant with her family in Saugus, when she heard the shots ring out 24 years ago.

“We heard noises, like firecracker-type noises . . . my dad got back into the car, and said those guys have guns,” the Illinois resident testified Wednesday in federal court in Boston.

She did not know it at the time, but prosecutors said the shooting was an assassination attempt and part of a broader power struggle within the New England Mafia that led to more shootings and murders.

Patterson was the first witness called in the long-awaited trial of Enrico M. Ponzo, an alleged former New England Mafia associate who fled the area in 1994 and has been posing in recent years as a cattle rancher in Idaho. He was arrested by a team of FBI agents and a US Marshals Service task force in February 2011.

From April 2014:

You may have heard the adage that a man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client. That is what one federal judge told Enrico Ponzo before Ponzo was convicted of racketeering and attempted murder last November.

But Ponzo declined the advice, fired his attorney after his trial and insisted he would represent himself. On Monday, the convicted mobster and would-be attorney was sentenced to prison for 28 years.
