(CBS) HOPKINTON, N.H. - Two young men who allegedly used a blow-torch to break into a safe in a southern New Hampshire business were killed when fireworks stored in the safe exploded, officials said, according to CBS Boston.

The State Fire Marshal says the men, Lucas Bourke of Allenstown and Ethan Keeler of Epsom, both 21, were using an oxy-acetylene blow torch to try to cut into a large safe in a workshop at New Yard Landscaping in Hopkinton......more........

What a horrible thing to happen. I find theft disgusting but for two young men to die in such as nasty way for trying to steal money is still very sad for me.
Still if you are doing something illegal like this you can't expect to not face the consequences of those actions!

"commerical-grade fireworks" kept in business safe?

I did a double take on that then saw it was a landscaping business http://newyardlandscaping.com which does "sitework" like rock-blasting to prepare land for building construction.

Were they 'explosives' or 'fireworks', both regulated by BATF? It seems the business was handling these materials responsibly by keeping them in a safe. I hope the business kept them (if applicable) per reg's in http://www.atf.gov/content/explosive...ements#storage . Lots of very specific requirements.

Innocent persons - at the business, or outside the business if stolen - could have been injured or killed by mis-storage or mis-handling.

These two were not so innocent, imo.

Business owner said one guy may have been familiar w. property & safe, but not the safe's contents,
and neither had permission to be on the property.
    Off duty employee? Ex-employee(s)?
If they were unaware of explosives in safe, were they going for valuables they assumed were in there?
Who would think -a landscaping business safe has sufficient cash or valuables
to justify planning and bringing oxy-acetylene cutting torch and gear?

    Image from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxy-fuel_welding_and_cutting.

JM and I may be wrong.

If they had worked as hard at a job, instead of trying to pull a job, they wouldn't need to steal. Safecracking isn't safe.

    Oh you just watch.

Relatives will sue for wrongful death or something. And win.

True story: I don't have a link, but my parents had friends who woke up in middle of night to find burglars in their bedroom. Husband had gun under bed and shot and killed one. It was a 16 year old kid on drugs. Kid's parents sued and and won. Now...what where homeowners supposed to do? Speak up and say "Excuse Me"....are planning to hurt us? And then decide whether to shoot or not? Screwed up legal system.
