Suspect is 53-year-old Fred S. Mott a convicted sex offender who is currently incarcerated for life for a rape committed in 1998 in Calif.
Kari Nunemaker was missing for 8 days before her body was found. Mott was a suspect at that time, and he disappeared around the time Kari disappeared.

The case against Fred S. Mott — who is accused of the 1991 slaying of 16-year-old Kari — goes to trial this week after being postponed early last year. The 58-year-old convicted serial rapist, formerly of Elkhart, has been serving a life-without-parole sentence in California for multiple charges of kidnapping, rape and sodomy.

“We’re close,” Kari’s mother, Shirley Nunemaker, of Wakarusa, said last week of not wanting to jeopardize the case by commenting on the upcoming trial. “We just want to get this over with.”

Testimony reveals graphic details in Wakarusa teen's murder

In his opening statement Tuesday morning, the prosecutor said DNA evidence would show Fred Mott brutally sexually assaulted her hours before she was choked to death.

Inside the courtroom Tuesday, packed with friends and family of Kari Nunemaker, the picture painted by prosecutors of what happened to this 16-year-old teenager was anything but easy to hear.

wow a 14 year old cold case....
I read the articles, this is an interesting case.

I'm sorry all - I am new to this sort of forum and I'm not sure how to move this thread.

Any other possible victims in his wake?

I'm really glad they didn't give up.

From February 2008:

http://www.elkharttruth.com/news/2008/02/28/Mott-gets-60-years-for-Kari-Nunemaker-murder.html

Fred Mott will serve 60 years in prison for the murder of Kari Ann Nunemaker, who was 16 at the time of her death in 1991.

Judge George Biddlecome pronounced the sentence this afternoon, several weeks after a jury found Mott sexually abused and killed Kari...

Now that his Indiana case is concluded, Mott will return to California to serve his six consecutive life sentences for violent sex crimes.
