Found Deceased AZ - Brian Histand, 25, Phoenix, 15 May 2013

From what I've read, it appears Brian may have sustained a head injury from his avid love of BMX biking. Just hoping maybe some of you sleuths can help his family out. Thanks, sad.

I've taken a special interest in Brian's case over the past few weeks so I'm bumping his thread. :)

First I guess a little background is in order:

"Brian Histand, a professional BMX rider with his own brand of BMX clothing called Veil Brand, went missing just a few days after he was showing symptoms of confusion which may have resulted from a fall while riding.

Brian was last seen near 35th Avenue and Dobbins Road walking southbound towards South Mountain after he lost the keys to his vehicle"

Next: I think this is the best article available regarding Brian's situation -

(http://www.kpho.com/story/22434995/father-flies-to-phoenix-joins-search-for-missing-bmx-rider) (SBM, BBM):

"His car, as well as his BMX bike, were found abandoned near 35th Avenue and Dobbins Road at the base of South Mountain. His credit and ATM cards haven't had a single purchase or swipe since he disappeared May 15.

<snip>

""South Mountain was somewhere that he brought me when I first came here and anyone who came to visit he always took them to South Mountain, 'cause he really liked it down there," said R.J. Orr.

South Mountain is the last place where Brian Histand was seen, around 5:30 a.m. May 15. A Phoenix police sergeant found Brian naked, praying in an alfalfa field. A call from Phoenix police was made to Mike Histand.

"He told me that my son was acting strangely out there but he was cogent, he had some cognitive abilities and they were able to let him go."

No one has heard from 25-year-old Brian Histand since."

<snip>

"Brian Histand's friends and family recently noticed some strange behavior from Brian: He started cleaning up the park where he rode his bike and skateboard, down to the cigarette butts on the ground a photograph showed him sitting on the side of a freeway picking up trash, his back turned to traffic.

"It makes me very sad because it's not my son, Brian," Mike Histand said. "He was sitting on the side of the road in the gravel with his back to traffic. Seems to me, that was indicative of him turning his back on society.""
<snip>

Mike Histand also said the family has had some hard situations recently, such as the passing of a loved one.

He said he believes the combination of these events, along with social pressure, have left his son at the mercy of someone who will see his photo, call police and help bring Brian Histand home.

"There is a problem going on with my son and he needs help," Mike Histand said."

And, here's some more background and details (he's from PA and was only in AZ about 6 months before he went missing):

"Histand, who grew up in the Langhorne section of Middletown and graduated from Neshaminy High School, was last seen May 15 just after 5:30 a.m. when police found him sitting in an alfalfa field near Phoenix, Ariz.

The responding officer said the young man was confused, but able to handle himself and he was let go, the local CBS affiliate reported."

-----------

"The Glendale Star newspaper cited police as saying Histand’s behavior had become strange in recent days. It was reported that Histand may have suffered a concussion following a BMX accident.

Media outlets reported that Histand’s financial accounts and social media accounts have not been touched since before he went missing."

Next, I will re-post the link to the "Brian Histand Missing Person" facebook page -

Here's his vimeo account (as a Professional BMX rider he has lots of videos all over the internet) - http://vimeo.com/user298203/videos

And a video from there of him riding his BMX bike (before he grew out his hair and beard - man, what a GREAT rider! Those jumps!! GEEZ!)

And finally, here is the map I've made of relevant locations, including his work, a coffeeshop he hung out at, where he was found in the alfalfa field, church he had started to attend recently, where his car was towed from, etc:

Brian has become very important to me, as a complete stranger on the other side of the country, and I am very much hoping that we have some members here who hike and bike and whatnot who can help keep an eye out for him or his remains if it has come to that (there's no way of knowing after so many months now). In the past we've had threads where locals go out and take pictures and things like that.. I know there is no foul play aspect to this case, so it may not seem as interesting but there IS a human aspect of course... someone has lost their child, friend, nephew, etc... and as you can see by his photos and videos, he is such a full of life kind of fellow, he needs to be found! So many thanks for anyone who can help in any way. :)

Looks like he has a distinctive mole on his face that should make him easier to recognize if his family can get fliers out. They should make sure every homeless shelter, hospital etc. has fliers.

I too have a huge interest in Brian's case. I'm touched by his sweet soul. I'm in Cali, but know there are very active searchers in Arizona, per his FB page.

I don't know how I managed to miss this case but now I have taken an interest too. Wow, he is an awesome rider!

Brian's case is actually why I came to WS. He can shred. No doubt. I saw a homeless man in downtown (midtown) Sacramento that was aimlessly walking up and down in front of a store and he looked just like Brian, plus 40 to 50 pounds. That's why I didn't call it in, I figure if he's been traveling, he's lost weight, not gained it. JMO.

But he was naked, right? Shouldn't they have arrested him for indecent exposure or something? A young man is dancing naked in an alfalfa field at 5:30 am and they just let him go? Am I missing something? :blushing:

No, you're not. He apparently was cognitively aware enough to give the cops his dad's number (a cop himself) as well as his home address in PA. Still, I am shocked the cops let a naked Brian claiming to be praying go into the night alone.

Arizona actually has one of the least strict laws on indecent exposure.

A person commits indecent exposure if he or she exposes his or her genitals or anus or she exposes the areola or nipple of her breast or breasts and another person is present, and the defendant is reckless about whether the other person, as a reasonable person, would be offended or alarmed by the act.

(With the exception of breast feeding which I'm pretty confident isn't going to be relevant here.)

Most states the law is if another person COULD see you against their will. There doesn't have to be another person present for the charge. In Arizona you actually have to offend someone.

Now I obviously don't know the LE involved here but I do know LE. (Not a cop just worked for them) This is a charge they try not to throw around willy nilly because it is considered a sex crime, and can result in having to register. If it's not something maliciously done I could see wanting to avoid charging someone.

He wasn't obviously intoxicated. He was mentally cognizant enough to give information, so I would imagine a 5150 was way out of the question. The LE didn't know the guy so for all he knew he was just a really spiritual weirdo.

He might of felt like family intervention was a better course of action than legal intervention.

Hey everyone! Still no news on Brian. His case has also touched my heart and his father has become a good friend through facebook. I have hope he is out there somewhere. Thanks so much sleuthers for caring and sharing. Let's get the word out there. Find Brian Histand!

Can we pinpoint where his car and bike were found? I assume that his bike was found in or on his car. If I were a good BMX rider, I think I might enjoy riding in this rough terrain. Was that his attraction? Or was it just about the beauty of the place? I read that he took people there. So they ought to be able to tell us about his attraction to this area. In May, it would be extremely hot. Correct? Could he have gone on a hike or to camp out?
