Woman accused of killing missing Tacoma man

Pierce County prosecutors have accused a 38-year-old woman of killing a Tacoma man who was reported missing about six weeks ago.

Margaret Effelberg was ordered held on $500,000 bail Tuesday. The News Tribune says she pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in the death of 59-year-old Santiago Cortes.

The victim’s body has not been found, but prosecutors say they have evidence Effelberg killed him, including confessions to her boyfriend and another woman.

Surveillance video and electronic records show that in the days after Cortes' disappearance, his debit card was used to buy a reciprocating saw, deodorized garbage bags, scented candles and Lysol wipes at three local stores, investigators said. Those items were later discovered at Effelberg's home after a search warrant, prosecutors said.

A husband and wife who lived next door to the suspect told police Effelberg had admitted to them that she "killed a man" and later confessed to the wife "I accidentally killed a man" as she started to cry, prosecutors said.

Margaret Effelberg, the woman charged in Cortes’ murder, told a friend “she was surprised that he has not been found yet and that he is close by,” according to charging papers in the case. Effelberg’s home is less than two miles from the spot where the body was found Friday. The Medical Examiner’s Office said it could be weeks before they release the man’s identity.
Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said detectives have considered whether the body is Cortes.
"That’s a strong possibility that it’s him,” Troyer said.

7 months later, I wonder if positive identification is still pending.
Tomorrow is one year that Santiago has been missing.

I just tried viewing Santiago's NamUs profile and I received a "Case Access Denied" message. Wondering if the body from 2014 was identified as being him.
