The upper torso of a woman found Monday in a San Gabriel Valley water treatment plant is believed to match a pelvis and legs found 30 miles away at another sanitation plant, sheriff's detectives said.

Detectives are treating the woman's death as a homicide, said Lt. Mike Rosson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities believe the body entered the sanitation system somewhere in the San Gabriel Valley. Investigators recovered more body parts Monday afternoon but were still trying to locate a missing arm of the woman, who they believe is Latina.

Body parts found at two treatment plants 30 miles away from each other appear to be related, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.


The upper torso of a woman was found at a waste treatment plant near Whittier on Monday and is believed to match a pelvis and legs found Saturday at a water treatment plant in Carson, officials said.

Detectives are treating the matter as a homicide, said Lt. Mike Rosson of the Sheriff's Department. Coroner's officials said they will examine the DNA of the body parts to be sure they are linked.

Authorities said they believe that the woman's body entered the sanitation system somewhere in the San Gabriel Valley. Investigators said they are still hoping to locate a missing arm of the woman.

"Anything that comes into the Los Angeles water plant must move through a 17-inch line before going through a central pump. So you imagine what kind of damage to a person's body would happen," Rosson said.

The torso was found at the San Jose Creek Water Reclamation Plant on Workman Mill Road, authorities said.

Don Avila, a spokesman for the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, said the two plants are interconnected. Sewage pipes as large as 12 feet in diameter connect seven facilities across the region, he said.

IIRC, this happened in Michigan as well. I think I remember coming across something very similar while looking into Jessica Heeringa's case...
 
I don't know what the geography is like where this happened. Is it likely that she was dumped into a stream, river, or lake that was used as a water source. Sometimes muncipalities will pull water from a lake into a water treatment facility where they filter out the sand, debris and then chlorinate. Or do you think someone dumped her body into a drainage ditch?
 
Just found the answers to my questions. They have found more body parts. They think that she was dumped down into a manhole intact. Will post the article.
 
More Body Parts Found at Water Treatment Plant

Authorities were investigating whether the case on Thursday was connected to two earlier cases

In the third such case in six days, authorities were investigating human remains found at a waste water treatment plant in Carson.

Details about the discovery on Thursday were sketchy, but the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office said it was investigating body parts found at a plant Thursday morning at the Los Angeles County Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in the 24000 block of South Figueroa Street.

It was the second such find at this plant and the third in six days.

On Saturday at the Carson plant, officials uncovered remains of a human leg and foot at the pollution control plant. Detectives believe Thursday's discovery is related to Saturday's find at the plant.

On Monday, a worker at a wastewater plant near the city of Industry found a human torso and head while checking a clogged line, officials said.

Homicide detectives and coroner's officials were investigating the connection among all three cases.

Authorities say the remains were identified as 27-year-old Erin Lynn Cruz of the East San Gabriel Valley. Investigators say she stayed at various homes of family members and friends.

Cruz was last seen alive with an unidentified man in the La Puente area on the night of Oct. 23. Lt. Mike Rosson of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department says that man is considered a person of interest at this time, but not a suspect"
