    CA - Walter Steever, 65, Nevada County, 23 Oct 2013

    http://www.kcra.com/news/search-oper...#ixzz2j9y93kYw

    Walter Steever, 65, has been missing since last Wednesday, the Nevada County Sheriff's Department said.

    He was set to return home this past weekend, but never showed up, officials said -- which prompted the search.
    <snip>

    Steever has a white beard, stands at 6 feet tall and weighs about 185 pounds, officials said.

    No sightings of Steever have been reported. Six agencies are assisting the Sheriff's Department, along with about 40 other people.

    Says he was last seen last Wednesday, but wasn't expected home until the weekend so searching just started yesterday (Monday). Sounds like they are taking the search very seriously, with so many resources dedicated to it. Kind of nice to see such an extensive search for a missing adult.

    I know this article says Nevada all over it because it's in Nevada County, but that's just the county name. This is in California.

    To clarify for those not from this area, based on where he went and where his car was found, I assume he was gold mining. I just realized that it's kind of a "given" to me, but in other areas people might assume coal mining. I'm trying to find more detailed stories to confirm.

    Well it's not much more, but here's a little bit:
    http://www.news10.net/news/local/sto...storyid=262151

    The Nevada County Sheriff's Office says there are approximately 40 people on the ground and using horses, dogs and ATVs as well as a helicopter in the effort to find the missing man. <snip>...his vehicle was located in a fire lane at the end of Owl Creek Road. He reportedly would park there and walk down to South Yuba River.

    They don't confirm gold mining, but if he's headed for a river to go mining I think that's a logical conclusion. I hope something didn't go wrong at the river.

    The flows on the Yuba this time of year are super low, especially with the drought. Not that the river isn't still dangerous, but getting swept away is much less of a concern.

    Good to know, thank you! I assumed so, but I wasn't sure. I was about to go look to see what I could find out.

    Updated story - not much new, but I am impressed with how much media coverage he's getting: http://www.kcra.com/news/fellow-mine...s/-/index.html

    For a third straight day, more than 115 team members are searching Steever's mining claim property in Nevada County for any sign of the missing man.

    I hope so too. I'm assuming he must have a fair amount of experience since he's got his own mining claim, based on the story I just posted. The article also references him being seen several times in the Pioneer Mining Supply shop in the past. Looks like they mostly sell mining supplies as opposed to say camping gear: http://pioneermining.com/index.php, but that tells me he probably tends to be prepared when he goes out.

    Slightly more info. Per the links below, he's married - his wife reported him missing. He's from San Jose, so it's roughly a 3-3.5 hour drive depending on traffic (map here: http://goo.gl/maps/2ibom). Although they found his vehicle by the mining area, so I don't know that his route really matters at this point.

    Here are a couple of other articles I found. The video on the second one is really good. Shows them searching and the terrain, and an interview with a neighbor. Also a heartbreaking story about him finding a deceased newborn in 2005 when he was out with his metal detector. He built a memorial for the girl, but the case was never solved. I know that's not relevant to the search, but it speaks to the kind of person he is.

    The terrain is described as desolate and treacherous. The LE officer they interviewed said he comes out there frequently and has known routes, which is where they're searching first. It was cold where I am last night and I'm sure colder up in the foothills where he is. Forecasted overnight low tonight per weather.com is 39 degrees. He needs to be found ASAP!

    One more quick link. Finally found one that has a description of the vehicle, and possible description of his clothing based on what he typically wears. I know it's unlikely anyone on here would have seen him, but posting it anyway just in case because you never know. http://yubanet.com/regional/Search-a...p#.UnF5VOKma6U

    His vehicle, a Chevy pickup with a camper shell, was located yesterday

    <snip>

    He is possible wearing a canvas type hat and typically wears a black t-shirt and blue jeans with a plaid overshirt.

    Oh no. A positive ID is still pending but it sounds like it's just a formality at this point.

    Rest in Peace, Walter. I'm so sorry you weren't found in time, but I am glad you were doing what you loved to do.

    Two articles:
    http://www.kcra.com/news/fellow-mine...s/-/index.html

    The body of a man who matches the description of a missing gold miner was found in a remote area of Nevada County, sheriff's deputies said Wednesday.
    <snip>
    Deputies said they are waiting to see if Steever's family can formally identify the body.

    http://www.news10.net/news/article/2...ing-gold-miner

    Searchers have found a body believed to be that of a San Jose man who failed to return home after working his mining claim along the South Fork of the Yuba River.
    <snip>
    The body was found Wednesday afternoon about 1,500 feet from Steever's camper, which was parked in a clearing at the bottom of Owl Creek Road.

    Nevada County Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Pettitt said Steever routinely parked the vehicle there and hiked roughly a half-mile down steep terrain to his claim, then returned to the camper at night.
    <snip>
    Pettitt said a helicopter would likely be used to remove the body and that a positive identification was pending.

    Sad news. At least the family can have closure though.

    I'm sorry to hear this, I was hoping he would be found alive and well.
    RIP Mr. Steever
