"A total of six sexual assaults that have taken place on the University of British Columbia campus over the past several months appear to be connected, police say.

Lower Mainland District RCMP spokesman Sgt. Peter Thiessen announced the number of assaults under investigation, which is twice the number reported in the past few weeks.

"[They] appear to be related and are likely to have been committed by the same suspect," Thiessen said at a Tuesday press conference alongside UBC officials".

"Published Wednesday, October 30, 2013 12:07PM EDT

VANCOUVER -- Hundreds are expected to attend a rally this evening at the University of British Columbia to protest of a series of sexual assaults that have shaken staff and students at the usually quiet campus on the tip of Vancouver's Point Grey.

The online invitation about the Take Back The Night rally has already been accepted by at least 900 students with hundreds more considering their attendance, as RCMP investigate what are now believed to be six linked sexual assaults.

Officers have confirmed the latest attack happened Sunday morning near the centre of the campus, with the other five spanning a period from April to earlier this month"

"The attacks occurred on April 19, May 19, Sept. 28, Oct. 13, Oct. 19. The latest was on Sunday at 1:30 a.m
The attacks have spread fear on campus, especially with three of them on consecutive weekends this month.

In the incident on Oct. 19, the man grabbed the woman from behind, ripping her nylons, punching her in the face and giving her a black eye. It represented an escalation in violence and prompted the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit to take over the investigation.

“This is very disturbing new information. We are now dealing with six assaults,” said Cowin.

“We want the attacks to stop. We want these crimes solved. This is a stressful time for many people on our campus and in this area of the city. This latest news will add to the anxiety. That fear is understandable but it is also critical to act and act decisively.”

RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen didn’t want to discuss in detail Sunday’s early-morning assault, other than to alert the public"

"At a news conference today (October 30), Stephen Toope told reporters that UBC is “deploying additional resources” to increase campus safety at night.

This includes stepping up campus security patrols and bringing in outside security personnel as reinforcements. Toope noted that the RCMP has also increased its patrols on the Point Grey campus.

“There is far more police presence on campus than ever in the history of the campus,” Toope said, according to video posted by CBC and CTV".

Let's hope this sob is caught and declared a dangerous offender at trial - otherwise he'll be out in no time and re-offending.

""What is most striking is the method of the attack, it's been a woman alone, she's been approached from behind and tried to drag into an area while the attacker tries to get his hands under the woman's skirt," Grainger said. "What's disturbing about this one is that the level of violence has increased, where clothing has been ripped and the girl was punched in the face... we're very, very concerned about this.

The assailant is described as Caucasian, late 20s to early 30s, approximately 6'2" tall with a thin build. The woman said he had short, cropped hair and was wearing jeans and a hoodie, and had what sounded like an American accent".

"The serial sex offender targeting women at the University of B.C. is likely a socially inept man who cannot summon the courage to speak with his victims, so instead attacks them from behind, according to criminologist Eric Beauregard"

<<<snip>>>

"Beauregard said the fact there were no reports of assaults by the same man between May 19 and Sept. 28 could be an indication that he was incarcerated during that time, or didn’t have a need to offend. Perhaps, he had a girlfriend or a job and was able to control his urges to victimize women, said Beauregard.

But since September, the pattern has changed with attacks happening more frequently.

“They are getting closer and closer in time, which suggests his sexual drive and deviant fantasies are taking over. He could be losing all control over his actions, and he’s not paying attention to the risks of being caught,” said Beauregard

No attacks between May and September suggests that he could be a student who lives somewhere else in the summer.

It was suggested that he might have an American accent...

Friday, Sunday, Saturday, Sunday, Saturday, Sunday

"RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said the additional linked attacks all were perpetrated in the late evening or very early morning hours by a man they describe as Caucasian with a slightly dark or olive skin tone, in his mid-to-late 20s, with a thin build. He is 5-foot-8 to 6-foot-2 inches tall, and has a longer rounded chin and face, a broad forehead and short dark hair."

Bingo. That's got to be it.

My first instinct here was that this person is in some sort of position of authority. I originally thought professor but the "late twenties" description wouldn't fit.

Exactly what I thought, student. I really cringe at the profile though of the social inept. That's just a guess. We had a serial rapist here a few years ago and it turned out to be a married very attractive outgoing man. These profiles focus the public on guesses not facts, timelines. But the police have decent description, good timelines, American accent could be useful. It's just a matter of time, they will catch him.

Maybe a grad student?...assistant prof?

who would be more likely to attack on weekends?

I'm thinking along lines of someone who works on campus on the weekends only

or someone whose significant other works weekends and/or night shifts, thereby freeing him up to stalk victims

or someone who lives on campus and whose roommate is gone on weekends

UBC offers weekend courses. What time are those classes over? What time did the assaults occur? I wonder.

The only specific time I have been able to find is 1:30am (Sunday).

I did see on the UBC schedule that night classes are only offered during the winter terms (2 terms Sept. - late April). We could infer that means no night classes through the summer but I will go look for a link on that in a bit... ETA: Here is the UBC calendar link that states "During the Winter Session, classes are offered in the evening as well as in the day."

" “Maybe their entire fantasy is all about being able to find someone alone and vulnerable, and actually reach up a blouse, a skirt, down a pair of pants. That could be the fantasy by itself,” he said.

In addition to the suspect description, police are probably looking for a person who has “acted strangely” within the time period of the attacks, according to Logan. He urged anybody who has noticed somebody acting strangely or aggressively approaching women to contact police.

The suspect in all of the cases is described as a tall, thin Caucasian man with a tan or olive skin tone. He was wearing jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt. It is believed he is in his mid-20s to early 30s.

While six of the sexual assaults have come to light, Logan said there could be many more that have gone unreported.

“I don’t want to alarm the public, but we have a reporting rate in Canada of sexual offenses that sits around 14 low, and 29 high. In other words, there’s only about 20 per cent of these crimes that’re actually reported,” he said. “My feeling is that there’s a number of other victims out there…that need to come forward in order for this person to get caught.”

Only 14-29% of crimes of this type are reported? Wow! That's not good. This could be just the tip of the iceberg for this predator.
