UK - Sopefoluwa 'Sope' Peters, 20, Durham, 29th October 2013

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-24776887

Sopefoluwa Peters, 20, was reported missing by a member of staff at the University after concerns were raised by fellow students.
Durham Police said he left his flat in Highgate at about 23:30 GMT on Tuesday and was last seen outside Klute bar near Elvet Bridge at about midnight.
He is described as black, 5' 7" tall, and has an American accent.
Sopefoluwa, who is usually known as Sope, was wearing a blue jumper over a black shirt and light green trousers.
His friends say his disappearance is completely out of character.
The second-year student, whose parents live in North Virginia in the USA, is studying economics at Hatfield College at the university.
    This is my hometown.
Worryingly the River Wear runs right thru the city, its fast in places and deep. There is a weir along the route from home to Elvet Bridge and its particulary fast and choppy bit of river (there a few routes home but he would need to cross the river whichever way he went.

Durham is a beautiful city, lots of green and river paths, cobbled streets and historic bridges, back alleys and courtyards.
Its generally a safe City, dominated by Durham Cathedral and Durham University.

I'm up in Newcastle and I saw it earlier in the Chronicle. Very worrying.

Oh dear. I've not known of many missing cases in Durham, but the few I can remember have ended up in the river. It's a lovely city.

I hope he's found safe, but I'm concerned.

Oddly I was visiting family in Sunderland this morning and wondered what was going on.
I'm not sure a body could get from Durham to Sunderland by the river so quickly.
It's a long way, very windy and in places thick with debris - notably near Fatfield in Washington. There are lots of places to get caught up etc.
I'm on ipad at the mo so can't link a map.

Whoever this is I hope they are identified swiftly and their family find peace.

THE body of a middle-aged man has been found on the banks of the River Wear.
It also states he was spotted lying on mudbanks near the uni accomodation.

    I dont think its Sope.

BBM- What do LE mean, exactly, when they say Sope's phone has not been traced? Are they saying it's been turned off and therefore isn't pinging, or are they saying they haven't initiated a trace on the phone? I assume it's the former, not the latter.

Also a little strange to me is how quickly he vanished after he left his home. He left to go out with friends at 11:30 PM, but was last seen outside a bar at midnight. That's not much time to vanish off the face of the earth.

If his plan was to spend the evening out with friends, what prompted him to go his own way so early in the evening (within half an hour of leaving his house), saying he'll meet up with his buddies at the next bar? Sounds like something made him change his plans- or at the very least, something caused him to take a detour from his original plans.

    Local news report.
Police and rescue searchers have been all over today. Its been awfully cold and wet and also very windy.
I've been out postering and I overheard a conversation about cctv being checked but things like that seem to take forever to reach the media here.

Klute bar's entrance is right on the riverside/towpath. Its literally 20 yds to the entrance to Jimmy Allens bar, up the stone steps onto the end of the bridge and one door up the street.
The river has been searched over and over (it 'loops' round the part of Durham that Sope was last seen in) but it gets quite deep and as I said previously, theres quite a lot of debris in places.
It is literally like Sope just dropped off the planet.
There are several routes he could've walked. Durham has quite a few back alleys which a 2nd year student should know about, also walking main roads there are two/three routes.

Media reports dont seem to have any new info, nor been updated since last night. Im going to fire off a few emails to try and get more info re cctv etc.

Thinking lots of positive thoughts for Sope.
My thoughts are with Sope & his family.

I am hoping for good news in the morning.
