Passengers told mid-flight that plane is carrying fallen soldier

Johnny Jet thought his Delta Flight 2255 from Atlanta to Los Angeles was a mundane flight like any other.

But he and the rest of the passengers learned 45 minutes before landing that there was a military escort on board transporting a fallen soldier.

He recorded the dramatic water cannon salute by the fire department to honor the soldier, and the short, yet powerful, speech from one of the officials.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the man said to a perfectly silent cabin. “I just addressed the escort. It is a sworn oath to bring home, to the family, the fallen. Today you all did that. You are all escorts. Escorts of the heart.”

Johnny further recollected the somber mood on the plane on his blog post.

“The water glistening on the windowpanes looked like tears. As you can imagine, everyone was silent, no one got up. I’m sure most had meteor-sized lumps in their throats and tears in their eyes like I did.”

AWE THAT HAD TO BE HEART WRENCHING!!!!!!!!! I do wish you would see more of these stories on the news , etc! It seems that people really don't know !
 
Yeah we sure don't hear much about the war or the soldiers that are dying in that war anymore, that is for sure.

I know I am not the only one who cried reading that.
 
I wish there were more salutes to our fallen soldiers like this one witnessed by a journalist. What a touching article and video.

I do not know what happened to the real journalists. I am so old that I remember Walter Cronkite reporting on the Vietnam war..every night. It was brutal. IMO, a lot of people do not want to know how many of our troops are killed in wars now days. We have gone soft.

I just wanted to share that we have just had the same thing happen in in our area. Thursday afternoon in the rain, a Delta jet landed at our airport with the body of LCpl. Christopher O'Bryan Grant, 20 yrs. old. He had been killed in Afghanistan.

This young man had done everything right. He played football for his school, sang in his high school choir, volunteered his time to good causes, and was just an all-around good guy. He was appointed squad leader in basic training at Paris Island.

There was a big crowd at the airport and a huge salute to him. People stood in the rain with their umbrellas lining the entire drive from the airport to the main road. There were various escorts including motorcycle escorts. I am glad I was a part of that. I just regret that there were no photographers that took part and not a lot of journalists.

We cannot become so accustomed to seeing our young men and women killed that we cannot be bothered to take part in their last homecoming. GB them all, and the families they leave behind!

I agree whole heartedly! The only times that this gets attention when there are protests that are associated with these. There was one locally that quickly came into mind.

I am not going to say what organization protested, but you know who they are. The thing about this was thousands of fallen soldier vets that showed up on motorcycles to block them. The police set up a perimeter around the funeral. I know the father and the mother and knew the fallen soldier when he was a child.

Reminds me of Robin Williams' last line in 'Good Morning, Vietnam', when his taped broadcast says he is on his way home - and he wishes they all were.

I am so impressed with these groups of bikers who travel far and wide to protect the vets...as well as protecting other Americans who may need a loyal group of Americans standing up for them...
 
Apparently God needed another brave hero amongst His heavenly angels.
God lift him up, on eagles wings.
 
I was on a flight that also carried a fallen soldier. Oddly, also a Delta flight and also between CA and GA.

I was shocked at how few responded how you'd expect (or how I expected, I guess) on the flight or when the plane landed. There was also the water canon and it was met by fire engines, and soldiers at the gate, but not family (that I saw).

The friend I was traveling with and I were some of the few who waited on the plane, or then at the gate.

Although the whole flight was weird...ignoring the rest of the craziness, we also had a person had a heart attack toward the end of the flight, but the plane was too big to divert to any of the airports we were over, so continuing to Atlanta was the most expedient; they even used the AED in-flight, hadn't seen that before either!

So we were actually met by medics for the heart-attack victim AND the fallen soldier.

When I had seen this article the other day I was glad to see at least on that flight that most people paid their respects and were moved by the experience.
