I did a search, but didn't find this UID. Remains found March 22, 2013 on the beach in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Not entered into Namus until Oct 29, 2013. **Mods if there is already a thread for this, please delete**

Wow! I can't believe I didn't hear about this. I'm guessing she washed up on shore. Too many people in that area even in March I think not to notice for too long. These are the hardest I think. Was this a drowning? A suicide? A boating accident? Ancient shipwreck remains or an actual crime? Who was that girl who disappeared in SC a few years ago? Britanee Drexel? If it is a known missing person with dentals in NamUs hopefully they will get a hit. I love KDH and Dare County so much, it's hard to think about anything bad happening there.

I am wondering why so long to get her entered into Namus??? I can't really find anything on Google about this either. The only note on Namus was "found on the beach". And she was so young!
 
Would like to find out more about the condition of the body to determine how long they think she had been deceased. They were able to determine she was a white female 16-21 years old. However, torso, one or more limbs and one or more hands were not recovered.
 
I think it might be hard to tell with what they have. :(
 
Man ... if she washed up on the beach and her remains are skeletal, she could be from anywhere and died at any time. There are over 510 girls fitting the UID's description on NamUs.

First I've heard about this too. I wonder why it took so long for it to show up in NamUs. While searching for any additional information, I came across this interesting article on the unidentified individuals found in North Carolina.

It looks like they are using NamUs as the data source for the article, so the woman found on March 22, 2013 is not on the map or in the searchable database, since she was not entered into NamUS until October 29.

I wonder if it is possible this UID could be from that time period, and
a casualty from Hurricane Sandy?

Hurricane Sandy hit Oct 22-31, 2012. Is it possible that somebody from that washed up 5 months later?

Wonder what kind of decomp would allow the UID to still be identified as a white female 16-21 years old?

I've read articles on Mr. Gibbs that handles these cases for North Carolina and he has a really good reputation as someone who genuinely cares and sincerely tries to take his time to work on these cases. Maybe he took his time to get this much info about this UID and that's what took so long to get it into Namus.

As far as the age, the dentals were entered and charting available, as per NamUs, so maybe it's possible the age could be determined through the dentals?

I remember that the Outer Banks were pounded badly by storms in March. Since skeletons do not float, I would venture a guess that this person was buried on the beach and uncovered by the heavy waves. I know exactly where this is, just North of the Wright Brothers Historical Site and across the highway from a strip mall, right on the beach. It's a busy area and thousasnds of people must have walked right over her. Once uncovered remains would be found right away.

Age can be estimated from skull sutures and tooth wear.
 
Its not a full.skeleton. No legs arms or torso. Pretty much probably skull and some vertebrae. I don't really see the burial on the beach scenario or the washed up in Sandy one unless I am misunderstanding. This area of the beach is just too busy.

When I mentioned buried in the sand, I didn't mean a burial on the beach, but rather if it was during the hurricane perhaps the sand covered parts of this UID that were found.
IMOO.

Hiya Irish,
Probably my post, and when I reread it, it sounds like I am saying she was deliberately buried there. What I meant was that she could have been deposited there by a storm, buried by it, and much later uncovered. This happens all the time with old boats, objects and debris of all kinds. She also could have been buried there by someone, we just don't know. It would definitely be a strange choice for a place to dispose of a body. They have not released a speculative mode of death, and it could be any of the five at this point. But knowing that area pretty well and having visited many times over the last 30 years or more, a body could not have been laying on the surface long without someone seeing it. It is literally between houses and the Atlantic Ocean.
They have dentals and hopefully they can recover DNA from molars, so there is a good shot at IDing her if the time is put in to this case.
