Canada - Till Moritz Gerull, 24, Yukon, 8 June 2011

    http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/06...-across-yukon/

"Last June, say police, German national Till Gerull took a direct flight from Frankfurt to Whitehorse with a plan of walking “through the forests of Canada.” One year later, his return ticket is unclaimed, his trail is cold and his family has been left to fear that, like so many others, Mr. Gerull never emerged from the northern Canadian wilderness he set out to explore.

“Often, we get people who come here and have a greater trust in their skills as a woodsman than maybe they ought to,” said RCMP spokesman Sergeant Don Rogers.

An RCMP press release claimed that Mr. Gerull had come to Canada on a wilderness trip, but in an email to the Post older brother Jascha Gerull wrote “We do NOT know if he has actually gone to the wilderness"

RCMP Staff Sgt. Brad Kaeding says the bones are human and male. He says camping gear was also discovered in the area.

"There was identification, so it does match up with a missing person, however we're not in a position to say at this point if the bones match up to that backpack," he said...

RCMP say they are not linking the bones to the unsolved case of a missing German tourist, but they are not ruling it out. Till Moritz Gerull was reported missing in 2012 by his family in Germany.

"An intense search will begin Thursday around the remote area in Kluane National Park where human remains were found last fall.

Whitehorse RCMP Staff Sgt. Brad Kaeding said this morning approximately 20 personnel from the RCMP, Parks Canada and the local search and rescue service will fly in tomorrow to spend the weekend at the site next to Hoge Creek.

A backpack and camping equipment belonging to a German tourist reported missing in 2012 were found at the site, along with bones determined to be human, he said.

Kaeding said while it was confirmed the bones belonged to a male, it was not possible to determine identification from the remains recovered.

The intent of the search is to thoroughly comb the area to see if additional evidence can be found that will help with the identification of the remains, the staff sergeant explained."

Sadly, Till's identity has been officially confirmed.

"Yukon's coroner has confirmed the human remains found in Kluane National Park were those of Till Moritz Gerull, a German tourist who went missing in 2011.

Chief Coroner Kirsten MacDonald says the identity was confirmed through DNA testing.

"We did have a specialist look at the dental remains and then not finding that to be conclusive we decided to follow the DNA avenue," she said.

Human bones were discovered in the park last fall. Then, searchers found a skull, jaw bone and teeth this spring in an area near Hoge Creek. A backpack and camping gear were also found in the area where Gerull's remains were located.

MacDonald says she is still trying to determine the cause of death".
