Thousands flee before big typhoon hits Philippines

    http://centurylink.net/news/read/cat..._as_typhoon-ap

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Thousands of people evacuated villages in the central Philippines on Thursday before one of the year's strongest typhoons strikes the region, including a province devastated by an earthquake last month.

Typhoon Haiyan intensified and accelerated as it moved closer to the country with sustained winds of 225 kilometers (140 miles) per hour and ferocious gusts of 260 kph (162 mph). It could further strengthen and pick up speed as it moves over the Pacific Ocean before slamming into the eastern province of Samar early Friday, government forecaster Buddy Javier said......more......

I posted this over in the model thread.

Super Typhoon Haiyan has sustained winds of 200mph and gusts to 235mph. There is a report that the Minimum central pressure is 858mb, which means this storm has the lowest pressure ever recorded on Earth. What is terrifying as well is its about to make landfall in the Philippines.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center has increased its estimate of Haiyan’s maximum sustained winds to 195 mph with gusts to 235 mph. The storm is now within a few hours of landfall in the central Philippines at peak intensity as among the most powerful storms witnessed anywhere in modern times. Widespread destruction, unfortunately, seems inevitable.

I am interested/concerned about this storm. I read (don't recall the source) that they had only evacuated about 3,000 people from one coastal city of 100,00+people. We all know how many people live on the coast there and how many cities/towns are at sea level. Just seems like it is going to be a disaster.

Great photo of the hurricane at huffpo. Can't figure out how to post the pic online. Looks like a giant fat lemon doughnut with a huge eye wall and is perfectly round.

Incredible unbelievable sustained wind speed! Really praying the people in the Philippines and path of hurricane stay safe.

As of Thursday afternoon Eastern time, Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Yolanda, had estimated maximum sustained winds of 195 mph with gusts above 220 mph, which puts the storm in extraordinarily rare territory. Since 1969, only three storms have had sustained winds close to this magnitude — Hurricane Camille in 1969, Super Typhoon Tip in 1979, and Hurricane Allen in 1980. No storm in the Atlantic has ever been stronger than Haiyan, accoring to The Weather Channel.

Family is safe inland. (Whew!) It is night there - can't assess damage. Communication lines are down everywhere. Prayers for the Philippine people when they wake up in the morning. Heading for Viet Nam now (storm - not me!)
