Police: fatal incident at Canyon High was assault, not fight

NEW BRAUNFELS — The death of a Canyon High School sophomore at the hands of a classmate had this shocked community abuzz with Internet-fed rumors Thursday about what sparked the confrontation.

Authorities said they're still trying to pin down the motive but know how it happened: the two-punch attack on Logan Davidson, 15, early Tuesday in a school hallway was witnessed by several students and captured on more than one video camera.

An unidentified suspect, also 15, was at a juvenile detention center in Guadalupe County, ordered held on a charge of aggravated assault. New Braunfels police said any upgrade to that charge will be up to the district attorney's office once officers finish their investigation.

Very horrible. I can imagine the horrified students seeing this horrible fight. This clearly is not a fight, but an assault.

New Braunfels-- The 15-year-old charged with aggravated assault in the death of fellow school-mate Logan Davidson sat in a courtroom with his head down and his hands clasped for a brief moment before the hearing.

Police have said Logan Davidson was knocked unconscious and hit his head last month during an attack in a school hallway at Canyon High in Comal County. Davidson was taken to a San Antonio hospital where he died the following day.

I have heard all types of motives for why he punched Logan Davidson. It ranges from bullying to Davidson reporting a student for doing drugs on campus.

From the trial, April 2015:

Gonzales testified Wednesday that it was normal for students to horseplay in the first-period chemistry class. Throwing paper, pencils and erasers was an everyday activity, he said. So when the respondent appeared to have gotten upset with Davidson, Gonzales said he wasn’t sure if the juvenile was really mad. “I didn’t think so, not genuinely,” Gonzales testified...

According to testimony, the respondent told some students to get out their cell phones to capture footage of what was about to happen. To that, Gonzales said he replied, “What are you going to do, just push him again? I’m not going to get my phone out for no reason.”

Moments later, the respondent caught Davidson holding the door for someone behind him as he left the classroom. The juvenile punched Davidson two times causing Davidson’s head to hit a wall after the second punch, according to cell phone videos played several times in court. The students walked away toward their respective classes and left Davidson unconscious and unresponsive on the floor...

The juvenile who fatally punched fellow student Logan Davidson at Canyon High School in 2013 avoided detention when sentenced this week, receiving what Davidson’s mother decried as “a slap on the wrist.”

Comal County Court at Law Judge Charles A. Stephens II placed the 16-year-old on probation until his 18th birthday and ordered him to perform 96 hours of community service, undergo counseling and pay restitution of $20,119 to the family of Davidson, 15, for funeral and medical expenses.
