Seven men are being questioned on suspicion of murder by police over the discovery of a body in a well in Surrey.

The body was recovered by specialist police officers on Saturday and had been there a number of weeks, Scotland Yard said.

Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons said: "It is a murder investigation. As far as I am concerned, when a body is found in a well it either fell in there or was placed in there, and the evidence is apparent that the body was placed in there."

He said the retrieval presented a number of logistical challenges, requiring a police marine diving team with breathing apparatus to recover the remains to preserve forensic evidence.

"The well is two feet in diameter, it is seven feet deep to the waterline and the water is approximately four feet deep," he said.

He said it was not possible to be sure of the body's gender but judging by the size it was most likely to be an adult. The person was white. "It's not been there for an extended period of time; it will be a matter of weeks at the most."

Jack Duncan, 17, and Rory Mulholland, 21, made the grisly discovery while working in the garden of a cottage in Audley Drive at around 1.50pm yesterday (Friday).

“I didn’t think it was a body, I didn’t know what it was.

“Then I saw the shape of two legs, and then a backside, and I realised it was a body.

“It was definitely a man. You could tell by the size of his thighs, he had builder’s legs. It was definitely an adult. It still had skin and hair, so couldn’t have been there for very long.

“I was shocked because I had been working right next to it. I’d even sat on the well to have a cigarette with the body beneath me.”

7 Polish men have been arrested? apparently they were renting the house but were moving out in a hurry on the Thurs. and when the gardeners came back on Fri., the men were completely gone

so this man probably lived there too or at least worked with/was friends with the others

Police believe the body of a man found in a Surrey well last week had been there for around two years.

Workmen discovered the body outside an address in Audley Drive, Warlingham, on Friday afternoon.

A post-mortem did not provide a cause of death but further tests have revealed the body, a white male, had sustained injuries consistent with an assault.

Police have also said the body was bound before it was lowered into the well by a third party.

Rest in peace, Damian.

Investigation into Damian's killing is now named Operation Jauja.

Damian's body was found stuffed in an old well near 11a Audley Drive, Croydon, Nov 15th, 2013.

The crime was quite horrific: 'He'd been severely beaten and had many broken bones'.

His Oyster travelcard in his pocket was last used April 2011, which coincides with the last sighting of him. Damian was from Glogow, S.West Poland and is thought to have arrived in the UK in 2008. Over 80 Polish men have lived in the residence since then.

Anyone with any information about what happened to poor Damian, please call police on 0208 721 4961

Or I am sure Polish speakers could email info anonymously to Crimestoppers here in Polish - someone will be able to translate it, I'm certain!

From May 2015:

Ten men were arrested on suspicion of murder but all were released without further action.

Detectives released a renewed appeal for information about Mr Chlywka’s death in February 2014 when the crime was featured on the BBC’s Crimewatch programme...

The case into the construction worker's death is ongoing with police still appealing for more information from the public... DI Norman also renewed his appeal to members of the Polish community in and around south London and Surrey to contact the police with any information they have.

From May 2015:

Strange there's been nothing since 2015. This article says: "We spoke a number of people who were known to the deceased at the time of his death and narrowed it down to between one and five people. A number of those have a high propensity to violence and assaults on their co-workers"

Of those POI's they think 2 may be dead, and 1 is back in Poland but the CPS refused a European arrest warrant as the case is not "trial ready"

(Minor rant - I thought the point of being part of the EU was freedom of movement and being "one" with each other, why does the reverse not work when we need someone bringing back to be questioned?)

I hate to say it but reading that article I don't think this will get solved.
