France - Police Scour Paris After Shooting at Newspaper Headquarters

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/19/in...ters.html?_r=0

PARIS — Police officers fanned out in the French capital on Monday in search of the man responsible for a shooting at a newspaper headquarters that left one man gravely wounded and the city on edge.

In what may be related episodes, a man opened fire later in the morning outside the headquarters of a major bank and there were reports that an armed individual in the same area had stopped a car and forced its driver to drive him to the Champs-Élysées.

Surveillance footage from the newspaper shooting indicated that the same man who opened fire there had brandished a shotgun on Friday at the headquarters of BFMTV, a Paris-based television news channel, threatening a senior editor before fleeing, the French news media reported. ...........

The police were seeking an overweight man of perhaps 40 with a shaved head, Libération said. ........A security official at the bank described the gunman as being dressed in a “big overcoat,” Agence France-Presse reported.

Photographer Shot at French Newspaper Office

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/...ounds-20921421

French police are hunting for a gunman suspected in a shooting Monday at a Paris newspaper office that gravely wounded a photographer, as well as three other attacks around the nation's capital.

The motive for the attacks, which prompted heightened security at media offices and the busy Champs-Elysees shopping avenue, is unclear.

Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins said authorities believe a lone gunman was involved in the shooting at the prominent daily newspaper Liberation, a similar incident at news network BFM-TV, a shooting at French bank Societe Generale, and a brief hostage-taking.

Authorities released video footage of the suspect. Molins said he was wielding a pump-action rifle and wearing a black vest, green shoes with white soles, and a cap. Molins said the suspect's image will be distributed publicly to help with the manhunt......more......

    Has video showing the shooter.

A manhunt is continuing in Paris after a gunman attacked offices of the newspaper Liberation and fired outside the HQ of the Societe Generale bank.

A photographer, 27, was critically hurt at Liberation. The gunman later forced a motorist to drive him to the Champs Elysees before allowing him to go. .......

At a news conference, investigators held up two images, one of the suspect in a street and another taken from BFMTV surveillance cameras on Friday.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said the "most likely possibility" was that a lone gunman was behind the three attacks and the hijacking. He said the suspect had not yet been identified and the motive was still unclear.

The man is said to be between 35 and 45 years old, between 1.7m and 1.8m tall (5ft 6" and 5ft 10"), with stubble and greying hair.

Mr Molins said the suspect was wearing a black vest, a cap and white-soled green shoes.

The BBC's Christian Fraser in Paris says the gunman had walked into BFMTV on Friday morning and emptied the chamber of his gun in the reception area.

"Next time, I will not miss you," the man had said to an editor he threatened.

French police take Paris gun suspect into custody

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25027595

French police have taken a man into custody on suspicion of carrying out recent gun attacks in Paris, prosecutors say.

They said the man bore a strong resemblance to the person shown in surveillance camera footage.........

The man was apprehended from a stationary car in an underground car park following a tip-off from a member of the public.

Prosecutors said the reading of the man's rights had been postponed and he was not yet in a position to be questioned.

They have neither given the man's identity nor any motive.

The prosecutor's office confirmed the man was inaudible and had probably taken some medication.

Some media sources have suggested it may have been a suicide attempt.

Investigators have taken DNA samples and are checking them with those retrieved from the crime scenes.......more......

French police name arrested Paris gun suspect

He was taken into custody at about 18:00 GMT from a vehicle in a car park in Bois-Colombes, north-west of Paris.

Authorities said Dekhar had been jailed in 1998 for his role in a string of fatal shootings in Paris.

Last Friday a gunman threatened a Paris TV station and on Monday attacked a newspaper office and bank HQ.

Prosecutors said late on Wednesday that samples of Dekhar's DNA matched that from the crime scenes.

They said he was not yet in a position to be questioned and the reading of his rights had been postponed.
