This bigfin squid will haunt your nightmares

The imagery is from 2008, but I think this is the first time the whole composite image has been released.

Meet the bigfin squid, an elusive and frankly quite terrifying cephalopod. This one was spotted in the Gulf of Mexico under 7,800 feet of water.

That is awesome! I've seen some incredibly insane creatures when I'm diving but obviously those are very deep water specimens that I doubt divers would ever see but I would love to if I ever had a chance!

I really recommend watching the video at end of article, it's so weird it almost looks fake until you see it move.

    Exactly... NOPE.

It looks like a cross between a spider and a manta ray. I definitely do NOT want to come across one of those, although I would venture to say the chance of me ever seeing one in person is slim to none. Which I am more than ok with.

Now, I know it's wikipedia, but I was curious about how big this thing actually is, and here's what I found -

A third video taken from the ROV of the oil-drilling ship Millennium Explorer in January 2000, at Mississippi Canyon in the Gulf of Mexico (28°37′N 88°00′W) at 2,195 metres (7,201 ft) allowed a size estimate. By comparison with the visible parts of the ROV, the squid was estimated to measure 7 metres (23 ft) with arms fully extended.

It looks almost alien-like. Although, I would bet most deep sea creatures do. I wonder how many creatures there are that we haven't yet discovered, I'm sure there would be a whole bunch.

So, this alien grabber is a type of squid?

    Seems wiki has an article.

Not the type of squid we love to eat by any means, but perhaps related? The jury is out.

Here is a link to videos of known shaped giant squids:

Unless I have included a link, it is my opinion and only my opinion that I am expressing.
