Princeton Students May Get Unapproved Meningitis Vaccine

    http://abcnews.go.com/Health/princet...ry?id=20924620

The students at Princeton University aren't kissing one another anymore.

Well, at least they shouldn't be.

A rare strain of meningitis -- meningococcal type B -- is sweeping the campus and has infected seven undergraduate students since last March.......

There is no vaccine for Princeton's meningitis strain approved in the United States, but the Food and Drug Administration has approved importing an unapproved vaccine for the Ivy League students. It is approved in Australia and Europe, but not in the United States. .......more with video......

Meningitis has been reported on a fourth college campus in America and has hospitalized three more, one of whom is listed as being severely sick......more.....

I did not know a school could do that! I am not sure I would want an unapproved vaccine for me or my children. It is approved in Australia and Europe and they ban a lot of drugs they allow here ,so might be safer!

Our FDA is such a mess that I'd sooner trust Europe and Australia's approval than our own. Sad, but that's what I've come to conclude after seeing how political and money-tainted our process is here.

Health personnel will conduct tests to determine whether her case is related to the seven cases of meningitis that have occurred at the University this year, all of which were caused by meningococcal serotype B.

State law currently requires incoming college students to receive a licensed meningococcal vaccine, but the vaccines currently approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration only cover serogroups A, C, Y and W-135, not B. Bexsero was licensed in the European Union in January and in Australia in August, but it has not yet gained FDA approval.

bbm, after reading this it makes more sense to me.

bbm, it appears that the serotype B vaccine is not approved at this time but cdc is working on approval for prinston students. jmo
It's my opinion if no link provided.
