THE alleged murder of a seven-year-old boy by his mother and her boyfriend was one of the most harrowing and distressing cases senior NSW police have ever seen.
The boy was found dead inside an Oatley unit earlier this year after his mother and her partner called Triple 0, claiming he had fallen off a pogo stick and struck his head.

Police will further allege the boyfriend filmed some of the alleged abuse.

A mother who claimed her seven-year-old son died after falling off a pogo stick in Sydney's south has been arrested and will be charged with the boy's murder in a case the head of the homicide squad says is one of "most distressing" detectives have seen.

A 29-year-old man, who was the mother's partner, is already in prison after he was arrested in September following the boy's death.

The Woodpark man had already been charged with 25 child abuse offences relating to the boy's treatment.

A police statement of facts previously tendered in court said an autopsy showed three fractured ribs, a bruise in the shape of a fist, feet injuries and bruises to the boy's legs, back and buttocks that were inconsistent with normal childhood injury.

The boy and his two younger siblings had been previously well cared for, but police allege that changed dramatically after the family moved early this year to the man's studio, which was windowless and had no toilet.

Several campers allegedly witnessed the boy being abused during the family's camping trip in March. He was seen sitting outside his tent one morning in cold weather, sobbing and wearing just a singlet and a towel around his waist, according to court documents.

Campers also allegedly witnessed the boy being beaten with a branch and forced to run laps until he fell face down.

One camper took a photo of the boy that showed a lump between his eyes and another on his forehead.

The campers contacted police, who started an investigation.

Two months later, the boy was dead.

I couldn't bring myself to "thank" your posts but I do appreciate your starting this thread for this lil fella. :(

So wrong. I hope these [unusual people] are made to pay dearly for this outrage.

This is a terrible case, and I hadn't heard about it before reading the news article below today:

Pogo Stick Death: Mum pleads guilty to manslaughter of her seven year old son in Oatley.

A MOTHER has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her seven-year-old son as court papers revealed that the woman and her boyfriend ate pizza and had sex while the boy lay dying.

Documents tendered in court for the first time yesterday revealed that the boy had suffered months of horrific abuse at the hands of his mother and allegedly the mother’s new boyfriend.

The boy was starved, brutally beaten and segregated from his family between January 2013 and his death in May.

In March 2013, the boy was spotted by shocked campers in Bulli being chased with a stick, not given food and water, forced to run along the beach until the point of collapse and hit repeatedly with a spatula.

A bit more digging and I found this article about the boyfriend being denied bail earlier this year:

The Sydney Morning Herald, February 18, 2015

A man accused of murdering his girlfriend's seven-year-old son and later blaming it on an accidental fall from a pogo stick has been denied bail.

The man, 29, who cannot be identified, is charged with 28 offences, including murder, common assault, inciting an act of indecency, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The boy's mother, 25, is also charged with murder.

The couple told police the boy died after he fell off a pogo stick at a home in Sydney's south on May 21, 2013.

But it is alleged the couple abused the boy for months before he died.

The mother has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and the boyfriend, a Christian hip-hop producer, will face a murder trial in October...

The man instigated a punishment regime based on the concept of "Spartans and soldiers" from the action movie 300, which included "boot camp" style exercise and vicious beatings.

Special punishment was reserved for the seven-year-old boy who had a moderate intellectual disability and was described by his teacher as a timid, softly spoken child.

Ten years!!! Australia seems to be as bad as my UK when it comes to pathetic sentences. At the very least that mother stood by and allowed the boyfriend to torture her kid for months, eventually killing him. And then she tried to lie to protect his sorry *advertiser censored* after her own kid was already dead at his hand! How on earth is a mere ten years an adequate sentence?

I'll say this for the USA. America doesn't usually mess around in cases like this. If she did this in America I expect she'd face LWOP.

As for the guy, he calls himself a Christian! A Christian!!! I'd love to hear this 's take on what he imagines Jesus would have to say about his actions. And I'd want him to get a lot more than ten years!!!

From November:

http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/kodi-mayb...d-in-oatley-music-studio-20151124-gl6qa6.html

Christian hip-hop music producer Kodi Maybir told four different versions of how a seven-year-old boy died in his music studio in Oatley, in Sydney's south, in May 2013...

He told Sergeant Power that he said to the boy's mother, Kayla James: "Just say it was the pogo stick" because he was "freaked out"... However, when his case came to trial, Maybir told a fourth version. This time, he said he and the boy were play wrestling and the boy accidentally fell on the floor...

Last week a NSW Supreme Court jury appeared to reject the "play wrestling" scenario, finding Maybir guilty of murder... Maybir pleaded guilty to six other charges, including assault and using the boy to produce child abuse material. He will face a sentencing hearing next year.
