Two people have been arrested as part of an investigation into slavery and domestic servitude at a house in London.

The inquiry was launched after one of three alleged victims told a charity she had been held against her will for more than 30 years.

Scotland Yard said the Freedom Charity, which advises and supports victims of forced marriages or honour-based violence, got in touch after they received a call following a TV documentary.

Further inquiries by police revealed the location of the house and with the help of sensitive negotiations conducted by the charity, the three women were rescued.

One was a 69-year-old Malaysian woman, the other a 57-year-old Irish woman and the third a 30-year-old Briton.

Oh those poor women. Kind of sounds like the 30 year old might have been born into the situation.

At a police press conference officers said they believed the 30-year-old woman who was rescued had lived in the house her entire life against her will, had no contact with outside world that most would consider normal. The three women were kept under a strong degree of control, officers said. Reports said the house concerned was in the Lambeth borough area of south London.

Vikram Dodd has more information from the Metropolitan police:

Where were the arrests made?

In Lambeth Borough.

Are the victims related to one another?

We do not believe them to be.

Are they in police custody?

No, they are in another place of safety. They are extremely traumatised which explains the discrepancy between when the Freedom Charity were contacted and when the arrests were made. We continue to work closely with the victims to gather further information.

Was the youngest victim born in the house in Lambeth?

We are not sure where she was born but she appears to have been in servitude for her entire life.

Any suggestion of sexual abuse?

There is no evidence of sexual abuse.

Have you dealt with similar cases before?

The Met's unit has dealt with cases of people held in servitude against their will for around 10 years. This is the first time we have come across people who have been held for such a considerable length of time.

Has the youngest victim had contact with the outside world?

We believe that she, and the others, had limited freedom. We will continue to speak to the victims to ascertain what this ascertained.

So if they don't believe any of the victims are related but the youngest has been there her whole life should we start searching for missing babies from 30 years ago?

She may have been sold to them. God I hate typing that.

Who are these women? Who are the perps? My God, what a world this is where women are held by other women and enslaved. Disgusting.

Sky TV has speculated 30 yr old born into captivity.

Women rescued Oct 25th, arrests made this morning, 7.30 am.

I strongly suspect the arrested pair are going to plead not guilty and the victims are going to have to go through a tough trial.

If the 30 yr old was born into captivity, I wonder if one of the older women was a frightened, single pregnant woman when she was first held? But then, police have said they don't think the victims are related.

Strange. Unless she is a daughter of the suspects. How horrible if she is. :(

I don't know if there could be any connection for the Malysian victim here, but thirty years ago was 1983;

"the only way to require right of abode since Jan 1st, 1983, has been by becoming a British Citizen"

Wonder if the Malaysian woman was offered 'help' to gain the right to live permanently i. England by 'working' for these people and found herself a slave instead?

Did anyone see the 6.30 evening news in England, Thursday night? I've heard there was an interview with the head of the charity where she said they were first contacted by one of the women one year ago. I'm still searching for a link though.

I think this local blog may soon get some of the details we haven't heard yet.
