Brothers anguish over Tattingstone 'suitcase murder'

Not a week passes without Tony Oliver thinking back to the gruesome death of his brother nearly 45 years ago.

It was 16 January 1967 when a farm worker discovered two suitcases dumped in a field in Tattingstone, near Ipswich.

Inside was 17-year-old Bernard Oliver's body, neatly carved into eight pieces.

Police are investigating a potential new lead in a murder dating back more than 45 years. The disected body of Bernard Oliver, 17 from Muswell Hill, North London, was found dumped in two suitcases on farmland in Tattingstone, near Ipswich, on 16th January 1967.

No one was ever charged with the murder, but two Dr's, now dead, were prime suspects. Police said they had been contacted by a man with new information.

Before his death, Bernard – who was one of six children and had learning disabilities – was sexually assaulted

The bones of another teenage boy found in Brighton, possible links to the murder of Bernard Oliver.

I can't find anything to suggest this boy was ever identified.

A private investigator in Muswell Hill claimed to recognise the suitcase used to discard Mr Oliver’s body, pointing to the distinctive P.V.A initials on its side.

She told police she spoke to a man in a launderette on numerous occasions and vividly remembered the case being brought in containing his dirty washing.

In 1977 she picked out a photograph of Dr Reddington whom she recognised as one of three men owning the suitcase.

Two months before the Freedom of Information Act comes into force, Suffolk Constabulary opened its files on an infamous murder and gave Ipswich's Evening Star a front page exclusive on a 37-year-old unsolved murder case.

A speculative request by the paper for the release of files of the Tattingstone suitcase murder, under the terms of the new Act, helped crime correspondent Mark Bulstrode uncover previously unseen evidence against the prime suspects.

Bumping this because this is just great stuff. Links galore. Incredible case with incredible possible involvements. You want Swinging London? You got Swinging London. Swinging London with a side darker than Whitechapel's in 1888.

I quote from the ukpaedos-exposed link above:
As the Beatles’ Penny Lane jangled cheerily from kitchen radios, the chopped-up body of Bernard Oliver, a seventeen year old Muswell Hill boy, was discovered in two suitcases at the edge of a muddy field.
Thanks for this, Robin Hood.

At a big London railway station in the spring of 1970, a plastic carrier bag was found in the regular search for bombs before the station closed for the night.
“The contents were an odd assortment of letters and photos, which seemed to have been taken at a kinky party attended by some well-known figures in entertainment.
“One in particular showed a pop singer who masquerades under a Christian persona; dressed in women’s underwear he was pictured with young boys. (I will leave that to you, just who that famous pop singer could of been !)

I would rather jump off a cliff than speculate...

Some of the old links are inactive, but here's one regarding the notorious Kray Brothers

It claims record producer Joe Meeks was arrested in connection with Bernard's murder, but he committed suicide (after killing his landlady) before the investigation was complete.

Joe Meeks was well known as the avant guard sound engineer/record producer who created the innovative popular 60's song "Telstar" by the Tornados.

It would be nice if this case could be finally resolved.

Another link to a recent article about the 50th Anniversary of Bernard's murder. This one has a little more information.

It seems police focused their attention on the two doctors, but Bernard's surviving brother thinks it was the Kray Brothers.

Part of the answer lies in which of the suspects had some connection to the area around Tattingstone, Suffolk. The village is about 76 miles from Muswell Hill in north London, so the killer had to have access to a car. The Kray brothers had lived in Tattingstone during World War II, and it was alleged they were part of a pedophile ring based there.

We'll have to assume both of the doctors who were suspects had access to a car or the police wouldn't consider them top suspects.

I remember this happening as I lived in Muswell Hill as a child, and Bernard played with us at the playground. I remember seeing his picture on a newspaper outside the newsagents, recognising him and then running home to tell my mother. It still chills me to think about it, and I feel very sorry for the family and that no one was held accountable.

Body in suitcase mystery one of Suffolk’s most grisly unsolved crimes
''In 2017, a Woodbridge man told this paper he believed the murderer attempted to sexually assault him after picking him up when he was hitch-hiking home.

A year later, a local woman came forward to claim she saw Bernard carrying two suitcases up the hill in Tattingstone days before seeing his photograph in the paper.

Another reader suggested the larger of the two suitcases resembled a military issue suitcase of the period.

Two main suspects, Dr John Byles and Dr Martin Reddington, have both since died – but Suffolk police continue to review lines of inquiry in a bid to solve the mystery.

The body of Dr John Byles, a former ship’s surgeon, was found in a hotel bedroom in Northern Queensland, Australia, in January 1975.

Byles, whose death was thought to be from a drug overdose, was one of more than 2,000 people interviewed about Bernard’s murder.

In 1963, he stood trial along with another man for sexual abuse of a boy.

At the time of his death, he was wanted for extradition and said to be part of the Holy Trinity paedophile ring, revolving around a church in Huddersfield.

Suffolk police were told he had once admitted murdering a cabin boy and cutting up his body.

Three notes were found beside his body in the hotel, including one to another doctor, believed to be Martin Reddington.''

''In 1977, a private investigator claimed to recognise the suitcase with the initials P.V.A. on its side as belonging to three men, including Reddington, who used a laundrette in Muswell Hill.''

I am quite certain I met BMO. Introduced at 'Michael Oliver' in a bus station in the mid 60s. A paedophile (now 93) with the same surname who lived in a house backing on to the family home. And oddly shaped the same surname. He's been interviewed by the police recently over this, but refused to say anything other then his name.

Point of law, which might not be appreciated from across the pond.
Whatever this crime might be - murder, rape, desecration of a body - Bernard Oliver was not a minor in the eyes of English law, when the age of consent was, and is, sixteen.

Maybe answers can finally be found now with any collected DNA, imo.

Bernard Oliver's disected body was discovered in two suitcases. Picture: Suffolk Police

''The teenager had been reported missing nine days earlier after he failed to return home to his father and five siblings in Muswell Hill, London, after going out to visit friends.''

''Officers initially focused on the suitcases in the hope that they would be able to establish the origin of the cases and a laundry mark found in them and more than 2,045 statements were taken in order to try and piece together the teenager’s last moments.''

''The investigation continued for more than a year, during which various items were sent to the Met Police lab for testing, but no one was ever brought to justice.''

That may be true, but it seems doubtful he consented to rape, murder or desecration of his body.

Ok, its a distinction that doesn't seem to be too relevant in this case.
You're absolutely right in a humanitarian sense. I was trying to point out the distinction supposing the crime ever came to a court of law. And as usual Fox managed to do it badly :(

Hey, no problem. We all have days when we're just not saying things the way we mean them.

I made a post at WS last week after having outpatient surgery, while still under lingering effects of anesthesia. When I read it the next day, it was very unusual, to say the least.

Sorry. What does that mean?
