Police: Nurse fatally stabbed while protecting patients

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/11/27/nursestabbed-protecting-patients/3763839/

Family, friends and coworkers are mourning a 57-year-old Texas nurse who died while police said she was trying to protect her patients.

Gail Sandidge, a nurse in the Ambulatory Surgery Center of Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, Texas, was pronounced dead Tuesday morning after the fatal stabbing attack by a man who hospital officials said was at the facility to visit his mother.

The NurseTogether.com website said Sandidge liked reading, sewing and spending time with her family. She had been on the hospital staff since 1978, hospital CEO Steve Altmiller said during a press conference Tuesday.

Police said the man's mother was having a procedure that morning and he thought they were trying to kill her....obviously disturbed.

Ms. Sandidge is a hero IMO.

A Longview capital murder trial under a judge's gag order continues to inch toward a full trial, though no date has been set for jury selection.

Kyron Templeton, 25, of Longview was ordered by 124th District Judge Alfonso Charles earlier this month to undergo psychiatric examination in the latest publicly available filing in the case.

Templeton is also facing three other aggravated assault charges in the case. District Judge Alfonso Charles ordered Templeton to undergo a psychiatric evaluation in June 2016. A gag order has been issued in the case.

This may be a dumb question, but how is the mother of the accused, does anybody know? I can't imagine what type of procedure she was having that would concern her son to the point of attacking medical personnel, thinking they were going to kill his mother!
Will be interesting to find out what the psych eval reveals!

Mental health questions delay trial

https://www.news-journal.com/news/2017/oct/13/mental-health-questions-delay-trial/

The mental competency of a man accused in the fatal stabbings of two people almost four years ago at a Longview hospital again has led to a delay in his trial, with Kyron Templeton's attorneys saying they need more time because the case is "extremely complex."

Templeton's trial had been slated to start Monday. District Judge Alfonso Charles granted a continuance in the case, and a docket hearing has been scheduled Dec. 8.

Templeton, 28, pleaded guilty before 124th District Judge Alfonso Charles and will serve twin life terms for the murders of nurse Gail Sandidge and Harris K. Teel, who was stabbed while he slept in the waiting area of the facility where his son was undergoing a procedure. Those life terms will run together.

Templeton also pleaded guilty and was handed two 20-year sentences for assaults on nurse Karen Bobo and visitor Teresa Allison.

Those are concurrent, running at the same time, but Charles ruled they won’t start until the life terms are complete. Life is considered 60 years in the Texas penal system.

Finally, a separate 20-year term also awaits if the life-plus-20-year sentence ever concludes, that for the third aggravated assault on visitor Melissa Sims. Templeton must serve half of all the terms — or 50 years total — before becoming eligible for parole.
