Sheriff: Arson cause of Rye blaze

http://www.chieftain.com/home/2057735-120/mapps-taylor-colorado-arson

Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor said since investigators determined the fire had more than one origin, it was considered arson. The bodies of three victims were recovered shortly before noon Thursday. The identities, gender and cause of the death of the victims could not be determined. Taylor said autopsies are scheduled to be performed today. “We are going to hold the scene. There is a lot of evidence,” Taylor said. ......

Taylor said photos recovered from the scene show Mapps’ van may have Colorado plate 591SBL on in place of the Texas plate 7-FSNK that is registered to the vehicle. Mapps may also take advantage of services offered to veterans or homeless wherever he is staying. “He was actually an employee of the family living in the home,” Taylor said.

BREAKING: Three people found dead in a house fire in Rye have been identified as husband and wife and their adult daughter were shot to death as they slept, authorities said Saturday.

Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor said they saw evidence of "multiple gunshot wounds" on the bodies as firefighters tried to control the blaze that was reported the morning of Nov. 27.

The three victims were identified as 51-year-old Reginald Tuttle, 55-year-old Kim Tuttle, and their adult daughter, 33-year-old Dawn Roderick.

The Pueblo County Sheriff's office has named 59-year-old Harry Mapps as a prime suspect in their murders. He was a handyman who lived at the house until a week before the fire.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation earlier determined the house fire was arson, with more than one point of origin.

Detectives continue to work leads and interview all known friends and family members of the Tuttles, the sheriff's department said. They have discovered that checks totaling $8,000, bearing the name of one of the victims, were cashed in Pueblo and La Junta on the day of the fire. The person that cashed the checks has been positively identified as Mapps. One surveillance image clearly shows Mapps in a blue van cashing one of the checks, authorities said........

"Harry Mapps is believed to be armed and dangerous and new bulletins have been sent to all local and national law enforcement outlets," said Taylor. "It would appear the motive for the crime was financial and the evidence only leads to one person being involved in all necessary aspects of the crime and that is Harry Mapps."

A nationwide alert has been issued for Mapps.

There is a picture of him at a bank in the van; he looks heavier and has a gray beard.

Hunt For Suspect In Rye Murders Intensifies

The search for Harry Carl Mapps, 59, has expanded from statewide to nationwide with the U.S. Marshals Office calling Mapps an extremely violent fugitive.

“We do consider him armed and dangerous; to be desperate,” Chief Deputy Kenneth Deal, U.S. Marshal said. “Maybe desperate and willing to do anything to further his ability to stay on the run.”

Mapps is the prime suspect in the arson and triple murder.

Bumping for the victims....this man needs to be caught.

Sheriff: Suspect in 3 slayings is likely on run

http://news.yahoo.com/sheriff-suspect-3-slayings-likely-run-200645377.html

DENVER (AP) — A nationwide search is underway for a former long-distance trucker who is suspected in the deaths of three people in Colorado and is likely on the run rather than hiding out, authorities said Thursday.....

"He was an over-the-road truck driver. He's very familiar with some less-traveled roads across the country," Taylor said......

Mapps was a friend of Reginald Tuttle's and had been working for Tuttle's trucking company while living with him and his wife, authorities said......

Authorities identified Mapps as a suspect in the deaths three days after the fire, but the murder and arson charges were not announced until Thursday. Taylor said the warrants took time to process.

"The new charges will make him one of the most sought-after fugitives in the country," the sheriff said. "Law-enforcement agencies nationwide will not want a triple-homicide suspect on the streets."......

Mapps was initially described as a handyman. His estranged wife, Sandy Mapps, told The Denver Post she ordered him to leave their home in Dimmitt, Texas, last spring. He quit a farm labor job in Texas and moved to Colorado, she said.

I am SO glad to hear this, thank goodness! Was so afraid he would hurt somebody/another family to escape.

Way to go Pueblo Co. sheriff's and U.S. Marshals!

Mapps, 60, pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder for the Nov. 27, killing of Reginald and Kim Tuttle and their daughter Dawn Roderick. With the plea, Mapps avoids a death sentence for his crimes, but received three consecutive life sentences to prison instead. He is not eligible for parole...

Investigators said Mapps worked for the Tuttles’ trucking business and lived in the basement of their home. But he was about to be fired and evicted when the murders occurred...

Before setting the fire, he took financial documents and firearms from the home and was photographed cashing fraudulent checks from the Tuttles’ business.
