Disappearance of Matthew Leveson

NSW Police are renewing their appeal for information into the 2007 disappearance, and believed murder, of a 20-year-old Sydney man.

Matthew Leveson, from Cronulla in Sydney’s south, was reported missing on Tuesday 25 September 2007 by concerned relatives after he failed to arrive at his work and could not be contacted.

He was last seen leaving a nightclub at Surry Hills about 2am on Sunday 23 September. Police then located his abandoned car on Thursday 27 September at Waratah Oval, Sutherland.

Detectives attached to Miranda Local Area Command were notified and launched an exhaustive investigation into his disappearance, which was considered suspicious almost immediately as it was completely out of character.

Despite extensive searches, Matthew’s body has never been located and police have been unable to determine the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

In 2008, Miranda Police charged a man with murder, however, he was acquitted at trial and the investigation continues.

The renewed appeal comes as the NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Michael Gallacher, announces a $100,000 reward for information leading to the discovery of Matthew’s body.

Detective Inspector Rohan Cramsie, Crime Manager of Miranda Local Area Command, said despite extensive investigations, police have so far been unable to determine what exactly happened to Matthew.

“There is a person, or people, out there who knows what happened to Matt. We’re again appealing for them to come forward with information that will allow the Leveson family closure and the ability to bury their son.

“There are a lot of unanswered questions, and, to this date investigating officers have been unable to determine what happened to Matthew. Hopefully this reward will give them the encouragement needed to come forward,” he said.

Matthew is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 175cm tall, of thin build, and with short blond hair. He was last seen wearing light-brown cargo shorts, a black singlet and white leather shoes.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is urged to contact Miranda Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

Thankyou Marly for posting this thread. I so feel for the parents of Matthew.....Here's hoping that some new evidence comes to light very soon.

THE devastated father of missing Sydneysider Matthew Leveson had to give the speech he dreaded after his son's older boyfriend was acquitted of his murder.

Telling reporters the family was "just stunned" and profoundly disappointed, Mark Leveson said: "Justice was not served here today".

"Please don't forget that 'not guilty' does not mean 'innocent'."

"We need Matty's body back," she said.

"There must be somebody out there who knows where he is, who saw him that night, saw something suspicious within that day or the next day.

"Please, if you know anything come forward."

She remembered her son as a "loving brother, a beautiful son, a loyal friend."

"He was such a beautiful boy. He didn't deserve this," she said.

A SYDNEY man acquitted of killing his young boyfriend, Matthew Leveson, was secretly recorded by a mutual friend after the 20-year-old’s disappearance, an inquest has heard.

The recording was played at the NSW inquest on Monday after it was discovered with a stash of other evidence in a box by police on February 25.

The friend, labelled with the pseudonym “Sally White”, wore a police wire when she approached Michael Atkins with questions about his missing boyfriend over a dinner at his home on December 5, 2007.

A secret recording of a man apologising to the parents of his boyfriend when they confronted him for not telling them their son was missing has been played to a Sydney court.

The recording was made in January 2008, nearly four months after 20-year-old Matthew Leveson disappeared following a night out with his boyfriend, Michael Atkins.

Mr Leveson's body has never been found.

In the conversation, played to Glebe Coroner's Court, Mr Atkins said he loved Mr Leveson, whose mother Faye replied, "But you never contacted us."

Mr Atkins seems to break down in the recording, and replies: "I know. I'm sorry."

Thanks for posting about the inquest, Kay and Estelle. IMO the only thing that saved MA from being found guilty of Matthew's murder was that missing box of evidence. WTH? Whatever happened to preserving the chain of evidence? This is not the first time boxes of evidence have been 'discovered' in investigators' private residences and 'taking evidence home to work on it in your own time' should not be allowed. It opens them up to being thought of as corrupt, if not being vulnerable to, and accepting, bribes to conceal it, etc. I hope the inquest results in some healing for Matthew's loved ones and they will, at least, have his remains to lay to rest. I can't say I'd be adverse to seeing additional charges laid against MA and the investigator receiving more than just a rap on her knuckles.

Almost seven years after Michael Atkins was acquitted of murdering his 20-year-old boyfriend, he will be compelled to give evidence for the first time, following a groundbreaking development in the NSW Coroner's Court.

Confronted with circumstances she described as "exceptional and compelling", Deputy State Coroner Elaine Truscott ruled on Friday she was "satisfied it is in the interest of justice" that Mr Atkins be compelled to take the stand at the inquest into Matthew Leveson's death...

For the Leveson family, Friday's decision was a hollow victory in their nine-year search for answers as to what happened to their son and where his body is located.

"This is what the system has forced us to do. We had to decide whether we wanted to bring Matt home or get a murder conviction," Matthew's father Mark Leveson said outside the courtroom. "We've always said from the start we want to bring Matt home."

BBM.

What a terrible choice for Matthew's parents to make. The conviction of a murderer and locating a victim's remains shouldn't be an either/or 'siituation'. Both need occur so the victim's loved ones, and all of the members of our community, can have confidence in our justice system.

I am glad to hear MA is required by law to give evidence. I'll be watching the inquest with interest.

Michael Atkins, 53, who was acquitted of both the murder and manslaughter of Mr Leveson in 2009, is seeking to have an inquest into Mr Leveson's death, requested by his family, stopped in its tracks.

Lawyers for Mr Atkins are also attempting to overturn a groundbreaking decision in the NSW Coroner's Court in May, where deputy state coroner Elaine Truscott ordered Mr Atkins be compelled to give evidence at the inquest...

Though the Levesons are not party to the legal dispute, the outcome could effectively end more than six years of lobbying to have the inquest reopened after their son's case was referred to the NSW police unsolved homicide unit.

"To have the inquest thrown out would be just devastating. I just don't know where we would go from there," Matthew's mother Faye Leveson told the Herald on Tuesday.

I cannot even imagine what this family has been through and still are, it should be mandatory that anyone involved gives evidence immediately, I can't understand that MA, if innocent, wouldn't have volunteered to do so, you would think that he would have been the first to do everything in his power to find this young man. His whole attitude is strange and if he is innocent, he isn't doing himself any favors.

I believed someone snapped and did the unthinkable. Hope that someone has the decency and respect towards this family to come forward

"Do you accept that the subwoofer was in the car when you went to Bunnings?" Mr Fernandez inquired.
"Probably," said Atkins.
"There was a receipt in the car from you," Mr Fernandez said.
"Yes."
"There was no boom-box."

Here a thick silence gripped the coroner's court like a snap frost as Mr Fernandez and Atkins stared at each other for a very long moment.

Fernandez remarks Atkins is nervous during this exchange about Atkin's movements on the 26 Sept. 2007.
If only Matthew's body was found then the police can build a case. JMO

Wonder what the coroner's findings are going to be? RIP Matthew, we all know who made you disappear and what he is.
