"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

Has he gone on "adventures" before? Does he have a usual bike route?

Is anybody familiar with this area to know if it's a busy place or remote? The deputy knew the bike was found and where, but not when??

"The Trek road bike was found unlocked and abandoned in a field near the intersection of Seacliff Drive and Center Avenue in Aptos, roughly 1.6 miles away from where he was last seen, said deputy Ryan Kennedy. Kennedy did not know when the bike was found."

This article says his bike was found at "Seacliff Beach near the cement ship." That is a not the same place as stated in the other article.

A Facebook page has been set up. https://www.facebook.com/FindNathan2013

According to a flyer on the FB page, his bike was found on Dec. 6.

Not unusual for a deputy who isn't working on the case not to know the details. Or maybe they don't want that information made public. Or the person who found it wasn't asked when they found it, they just turned it in.

This article also says the bike was found yesterday morning.

There is a video at that link. It might have more info than was stated in the article.

Now this one says the bike was found at 10 pm on Thursday in the town at Seacliff and State Park drives.

This area is and isn't remote all at the same time IMO. There is brush and trails and forest but there are always people around the beach and people are very active outdoors hiking and walking in the woods and on the trails and biking. And no matter what the weather people are always on or around this beach. I am going to see if I can go and help search tomorrow. I am so worried for this young man because it has been extremely cold for this area for the last week, for people in other parts of the country they probably think not but for this area it is. 4 people have died from exposure over the mountain in the San Jose area. Last night it rained with hail and I live right on the beach which was amazing and the cold does not usually last this long either. I thought of him all night and praying for him.

I can not believe that the "official" search has been called off. Did the Sheriff's office use dogs at the location of the bicycle to at least get a direction that he went while leaving the bike? Last night it rained a lot so I wonder if that affects the scent.

Oh this kind of story just breaks my heart since the possibilities seem endless. Praying he will be located and be safe. Can't really imagine why he would leave his bike. This isn't just any bike either....its a TREK which is a super nice bike. My husband is a cyclist and I have learned alot about bicycles in the past 2 years.

I know you are so right... that bike is amazing and around here bikes get stolen in a heartbeat so people know not to leave them for a minute. It is so heartbreaking. It is so palpable when it is close to home. I look over, slueth and feel connected to certain cases all over but the ones close by are so so painful.

I don't want to be negative but my initial feeling was that he went out to harm himself when I read about his disappearance on another website a few days ago. I so hope I'm wrong. Praying for his safe return.

I have a different take on this: If he told his mother he was "going on an adventure" is that what he usually stated when he was going on a trek on his bike? OR; was he planning to meet up with someone and start a new life? I'd be all OVER his internet searches, home PC and any laptops or tablets and cell phone he had. Is his phone on him? I think that he met up with someone; why would he leave a prized bike unlock and abandoned like that? Unless he had other options. He is 17 correct, just short of legal age. Maybe he got tired of waiting for life to start as an adult and he pushed the envelope. With LE stopping the search it also leads me to believe he may hv left on his own accord. This gives me hope that he will be found alive, like with Nicholas F.
