I don't think this case has ever been posted here, and it seems very sad that police have worked so hard to identify this poor lady over the years, and haven't had a single lead. Someone, somewhere in the world is wondering what happened to her. Maybe WSers can help? She was found in England, but this case stretches across the globe.

Pennine Woman was found by walkers in a mountain stream beside a pot hole on Sept 20th, 2004. Probably washed down from further upstream. The Pennine Way is a natural area in the Yorkshire Dales in England, very popular with walkers and hikers. She was somewhere between the villages of Pen-y-ghent and Horton.

Pennine Woman had been there 1-3 weeks, so that puts her estimated date of death between August 31st and September 14th, 2004. Cause of death never established.

She was wearing green, Marks and Spencer (UK Store) jeans, UK size 12 (US 10), a white bra and black underwear. A white and turquoise, horizontal striped t-shirt was laying near her body. No shoes, jacket or bag was found.

Accessories: Plain, 22 carat gold band on wedding ring finger. Made in Thailand, ladies' size L

Experts have determined she was of 'Oriental' ethnicity, originating in South East Asia somewhere, possibly China, Korea, Thailand or the Phillippinnes.

The wedding ring she wore was very old and worn. As it was made in Thailand, I'd say the likelihood is, this UID is from Thailand originally.

Only place I could find a reliable missing list in a language I can read was on Interpol, which I'm sure they have already checked against, but I went ahead and checked all countries of SE Asia, and even beyond a bit, and didn't come up with any matches.

The Thai missing website was all in Thai, with no translate option - my chrome browser on iPad doesn't have the option to translate, perhaps someone else can?

A pub/restaurant I go to sometimes is run by a Thai family. If I think on next time I'm in I'll show the picture and see if they have any suggestions.

That's an excellent idea. I was just going to post that we really could do with a Thai connection here. If they just have an idea where we could forward the info, that would be great.

I have the translated website, but it's not very clear if the mirror foundation database has been closed down or not, to me. If I can work out how to contact them, I was thinking it might be worth sending them a link to the appeal, just in case.

I vaguely remember this being in the news back in 2004 but have never heard or seen of anything since. So sad.

Her UK Missing Persons Bureau page has a different picture and photos of her clothes, I do not know how to show them within the post.
Hair listed as "Very Long" yet from the sketch's I wouldn't say it was even long?

Do you recognise the markings on the inside of this gold ring?

The ring is a conventional gold wedding band which was found with the deceased in 2004.

We've already carried out significant enquiries involving the ring, but so far we haven't been able to pin down the markings.

We're trying to identify these markings, which may be manufacturer or hallmarks, so we can establish the age of the ring and where it may have come from. This in turn would help focus our search for the origin of the deceased.

An unidentified South East Asian woman whose body was found near Pen-y-ghent in 2004 may have been a “Thai bride” based in north Lancashire or south Cumbria.

This is a line of enquiry that is currently being examined by the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Police’s Cold Case Review Unit.

The body was discovered by a group of walkers on 20 September 2004 on the Pennine Way between Pen-y-ghent and Horton in Ribblesdale. She was lying in a mountain stream at the entrance to a pot hole near Sell Gill Pot.



There has never been an established cause of death but the circumstances have remained suspicious.

A post mortem examination suggested that she had been dead for between one and three weeks, putting the time of her death between 31 August and 13 September 2004.

An inquest in May 2007 recorded an open verdict.

Adam Harland, manager of the Cold Case Review Unit, explained that tests on the woman’s hair suggest she may have settled in north Lancashire or south Cumbria.

Enquiries linked to her clothing and jewellery also confirmed she had been in the UK for at least two years and may have come to the country as a “Thai bride”.

Mr Harland said: “This term does not necessarily mean the woman comes from Thailand, but that she is a lady who has taken up a relationship with a white gentleman and has come back to live in the UK in the late 1990s or early 2000s.

“That would probably mean that her partner is older than her and quite likely has led a more solitary, individual life prior to their relationship taking place.

“Whoever her partner was in the last days of her life is the person we need to locate and speak to.”

Mr Harland is urging people in north Lancashire and south Cumbria to think back to this time and see if they recall a woman from South East Asia who may have been in relationship with a local man.

“It is probable that others who knew this lady were told that the relationship had ended and that she had ‘gone home’,” said Mr Harland.

“However the hypothesis we prefer is that she had been killed somewhere else, possibly in her own home, before her body was transported and deposited in this remote location. We believe a vehicle was used to take her there, probably a 4×4 due to the difficult terrain.”

The physical details of the woman have been issued previously, along with an artist’s impression which Mr Harland says should be viewed with caution.

He said: “I am more interested in matching the circumstances of the woman’s life rather than matching someone to original artist’s impression. Someone out there must know who she is.”

The woman is described as South East Asian which encompasses China, Korea, Thailand and the Philippines, 4ft 11in tall, aged 20 to 40, about 10 stones, brown eyes, dark-brown shoulder-length hair, both ears pierced, with a distinctive gap between her front lower teeth which would have been noticeable when she smiled.

A SPECIAL service at St Oswald’s Church, Horton-in-Ribblesdale at the weekend included readings from the funeral of the ‘lady of the hills’ - the woman found dead near Penyghent 14 years ago and who police now believe may have been a ‘Thai bride’.
